The great gathering of Catalan dance
Created in 1959, the Céret Sardana Festival is one of the oldest and most prestigious events dedicated to the sardana, the emblematic dance of Catalan culture. Every year in July, for three days, the historic squares of Céret are transformed into open-air stages where the melodies of the coblas resonate and where dancers form joyful circles. The colles (dance groups) and coblas (Catalan orchestras) parade through the streets and squares of the village. The highlight of the festival is the competition day in the bullring, which concludes with the "Germanor", a sardana of fraternity bringing together up to 500 dancers in a single circle.
Since 1959, the Céret Sardana Festival has celebrated the sardana, a symbol of unity, freedom, and Catalan identity. For three days in July, the historic squares of the capital of Vallespir are transformed into immense open-air dance floors, to the sound of traditional coblas.
The sardana is much more than just a dance: it is a powerful symbol of Catalan identity, a round dance open to all, regardless of age or skill level. The festival perpetuates this tradition by offering cobla concerts in the main squares of the town, giant sardanas open to everyone, day and night, as well as introductory workshops for all ages.
The highlight of the festival is the competition day held in the Céret bullring. Colles from all over Catalan territory compete in a spirit of conviviality and respect for traditions. The day concludes with the "Germanor", a grand sardana of fraternity where up to 500 dancers gather in one single circle, offering a spectacle of rare beauty and intense emotion.
For several editions, the festival has also hosted the Catalan Sardana Cup, reinforcing its status as a major event for lovers and enthusiasts of this traditional dance. The festival is a moment of intergenerational sharing, true to the spirit of the sardana: a dance for everyone, open and fraternal.
The 68th edition of the Céret Sardana Festival will be held in July 2026. Three days of Catalan dance celebration with cobla concerts, giant sardanas open to all, and competition in the Céret bullring.
