Awareness festival on rising waters in Île-Tudy
The Si la Mer Monte Festival is an environmental festival created in 2009 by the association EffetMer in Île-Tudy, Finistère. Every year, on the Pentecost weekend, this committed festival raises awareness among citizens and elected officials about the consequences of the inevitable rise in sea level, one of the main consequences of global warming. Each year, the festival invites a coastal region of the world facing the same challenges, offering conferences-debates, shows, stories, culinary tastings, and music in a friendly and militant atmosphere. The event is complemented by "escape outings" in other threatened coastal towns in Southern Finistère.
Since 2009, the Si la Mer Monte festival has been held annually in Île-Tudy, a small coastal commune in the Pays Bigouden particularly vulnerable to rising waters. Created by the association EffetMer, this unique festival uses culture, art, and debate to raise awareness among the widest possible audience about the consequences of the inevitable rise in sea level.
Each edition of the festival invites a coastal region of the world facing the same challenges of marine submersion. The Camargue, the Netherlands, Bangladesh, Polynesia, Senegal, Galicia, and other territories have shared their experiences and solutions in the face of rising waters. In 2025, Galicia was honored, with representatives from Greenpeace España and the University of Vigo. In 2026, the festival will host Martinique.
The festival's program combines scientific conferences, citizen debates, live performances, storytelling, and artistic performances. Researchers, elected officials, association activists, and artists gather to discuss the challenges of rising waters and adaptation solutions. Evening shows, often poetic and committed, extend the reflection through emotion and imagination.
Beyond the main festival, EffetMer organizes two annual "escape outings" in other threatened coastal towns in Southern Finistère. These decentralized events help carry the festival's message to other territories and build a network of solidarity among coastal towns facing submersion risks.
Île-Tudy, a narrow peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pont-l'Abbé river, embodies the challenges of climate change on the Breton coast. With its very low altitude and vulnerability to marine submersion, the commune serves as a living laboratory for rising water issues. The festival transforms this reality into a tool for collective awareness, combining scientific rigor and citizen engagement.
