Breton tradition and embroidery festival in Pont-l'Abbé, capital of Pays Bigouden
Every summer, in July, Pont-l'Abbé, the capital of Pays Bigouden, hosts the Fête des Brodeuses, one of the oldest folk festivals in France. Created in 1954, this event originated from the tradition of electing the "queen of embroiderers", highlighting the ancestral know-how of Bigouden embroidery.
The highlight of the Fête des Brodeuses is the grand parade in traditional costumes, which winds through the streets of Pont-l'Abbé on Friday morning. Hundreds of participants don the famous Bigouden headdresses, embroidered costumes, and adorned aprons, offering a colorful spectacle. This parade demonstrates the pride of Pays Bigouden in its unique sartorial heritage, recognized far beyond Brittany.
The festival features folk shows showcasing the traditional dances and music of Pays Bigouden and all of Brittany. Celtic circles and bagadoù perform on the festival stages. An embroidery contest rewards the most beautiful works, perpetuating an artisanal know-how passed down through generations.
The Fête des Brodeuses is also a time for celebration and conviviality. A large free fest-noz kicks off the festivities on Thursday evening, while Celtic music concerts and a Breton show at the Triskell hall liven up the evenings. On Sunday, a traditional ball and a closing fest-noz bring together dancers and spectators for a festive finale.
The Fête des Brodeuses is more than just a festival: it is an act of preserving and transmitting Bigouden heritage. The Fête des Brodeuses association works throughout the year to prepare this event, in conjunction with Celtic circles, embroiderers, local authorities, and volunteers. The festival helps keep the tradition of Bigouden embroidery alive and promotes Pays Bigouden far beyond its borders.
The 72nd edition of the Fête des Brodeuses will take place from July 9 to 12, 2026, in Pont-l'Abbé, capital of Pays bigouden. Four days of Breton folk festivities: fest-noz, shows, traditional costume parade, crowning of the Queen of Embroiderers, and triumph of the pipers.
