Breton and Celtic culture festival in Landerneau
The Kann al Loar festival is a major event for Breton and Celtic culture that takes place every summer in Landerneau, in Finistère. Created in 1986, it offers five days in early July with a rich program combining traditional Breton music, world music, theater in Breton, dance, cinema, workshops for children, and festoù-noz. Supported by an association of enthusiasts and over a hundred volunteers, the festival hosts more than 150 artists and brings together several thousand spectators around the Breton language and culture.
Every summer, in early July, the town of Landerneau vibrates to the rhythm of the Kann al Loar festival. Created in 1986, this festival has become one of the unmissable events for Breton and Celtic culture in Finistère. Its name, “Kann al Loar” (“Song of the Moon” in Breton), reflects the poetic and artistic dimension of an event that celebrates Breton creativity in all its forms.
The Kann al Loar festival stands out for the diversity of its programming. Traditional Breton music, Celtic and world music, theater and cinema in the Breton language, contemporary and traditional dance, workshops for children and adults: each edition offers a complete panorama of the Breton artistic scene and its influences. The festoù-noz (Breton balls), key moments of the festival, bring together experienced and beginner dancers in a warm and festive atmosphere.
One of the festival's highlights is the grand parade, which brings together over 600 traditional musicians and dancers in the streets of Landerneau. Street performances, open-air concerts, and entertainment in the town's bars and restaurants contribute to creating a unique atmosphere, where the celebration invades every corner of the town center.
Beyond the celebration, Kann al Loar is a militant act in favor of the Breton language. The festival gives pride of place to Breton in its communications, shows, and workshops. Theater in Breton, storytelling, language initiation workshops: Kann al Loar works for the transmission and enhancement of Breton linguistic heritage for all audiences.
The Kann al Loar association and its more than a hundred volunteers organize this event every year with passion and commitment. The festival benefits from the support of the town of Landerneau, the department of Finistère, and the Brittany region, demonstrating its local roots and institutional recognition.
