Brittany's oldest folk festival in Pont-Aven
The Fête des Fleurs d'Ajonc is Brittany's oldest folk festival, created in 1905 by songwriter Théodore Botrel in Pont-Aven. Every year, on the first weekend of August, the painters' city comes alive with parades in traditional Aven costumes, Breton dances, fest-noz, and cultural events. The election of the Queen of the Gorse Flowers is the highlight of this free and popular festival, which has been perpetuating the clothing and musical traditions of Cornouaille, Brittany for over a century in a spirit of conviviality and identity pride.
The Fête des Fleurs d'Ajonc was born on the first Sunday of August 1905, when songwriter Théodore Botrel organized the first folk festival in Pont-Aven, Finistère. More than a century later, this festival remains the oldest folk festival in Brittany and one of the most emblematic cultural events in Cornouaille.
The heart of the Fête des Fleurs d'Ajonc beats to the rhythm of the parades in traditional costumes. Participants don the magnificent Aven costumes — embroidered headdresses, silk aprons, ornate vests, and guided hats — in a colorful procession that winds through the streets of Pont-Aven. These costumes, passed down from generation to generation, testify to the richness of Breton sartorial heritage and make each parade a true living spectacle.
The highlight of the festival, the election of the Queen of the Gorse Flowers, perpetuates a century-old tradition. The queen, dressed in the most beautiful traditional Aven costume, embodies the cultural pride of the region and reigns over the festivities for the entire duration of the event. This ceremony, filled with emotion and solemnity, is a key moment in the cultural life of Pont-Aven.
The festival's program features the musical and dance traditions of Brittany. Fest-noz events enlivened by traditional music groups, Breton dance demonstrations, open stages, and concerts punctuate the days and evenings. The Square Théodore Botrel, in the heart of the painters' city, is the main venue for the festivities.
Pont-Aven, world-renowned for its School of Painting and for Paul Gauguin, offers an enchanting setting for this popular festival. The picturesque alleys, the banks of the Aven river, and the art galleries are adorned with the colors of the gorse — this golden-yellow flower emblematic of the Breton moors — to celebrate the Cornouaille identity. The festival is entirely free, supported by the Comité des Fêtes des Fleurs d'Ajonc and its dedicated volunteers.
