Classical and contemporary music festival in Pays Bigouden
Since 2002, the Rencontres Musicales de Penmarc'h have offered an exceptional musical event each summer in the heart of Pays Bigouden. Founded by pianists Véronique Briel and Vincent Leterme, this classical and contemporary music festival is built on deep friendships between artists and locals, creating a unique event where chamber music is featured in the most unexpected places in Penmarc'h.
The beating heart of the festival is the Chapelle de La Madeleine, a religious building whose remarkable acoustics and bucolic setting make it an ideal venue for chamber music. It is here that the main evening concerts take place at 8:30 PM, in an intimate and contemplative atmosphere that allows for deep listening and a rare closeness between musicians and the audience. The simple beauty of this Breton chapel, bathed in the evening light, adds an emotional dimension to each performance.
What makes the Rencontres Musicales truly unique is its use of unusual locations. Over the years, the festival has extended its programming far beyond the chapel: the Penmarc'h lighthouse becomes a bandstand, bistros transform into intimate concert halls, art galleries host recitals, markets resonate with classical melodies, and retirement homes receive visits from musicians. This approach embodies the belief that great music should reach all audiences, in the places of their daily lives.
The programming of the Rencontres Musicales navigates with ease between the great works of the classical repertoire and contemporary creations. The concerts feature works by Bach, Haydn, Schumann, Brahms, Grieg, Chopin, Fauré, Franck, and Dvořák, in dialogue with pieces by today's composers such as Mantovani, Marciano, Hossein, Bouchot, and Leterme himself. The programs, different each evening, are designed to surprise and move, weaving subtle links between eras and aesthetics.
Each year, the festival brings together a group of high-level artists around its founders. Among the regular musicians of the festival are: Louise Leterme (vocals), Patricia Reibaud (violin), Olivier Seube (viola), Véronique Fèvre (clarinet), Marine Perez (flute), Frédéric Lubiatto (cello), and Clémence Le Gac (piano and conducting). This fidelity of performers gives the Rencontres an artistic coherence and musical complicity that is felt in every performance.
"Reinvented, rooted, in the heart of Penmarc'h": this motto summarizes the spirit of a festival that constantly renews itself while remaining deeply rooted in its territory. The Rencontres Musicales create bridges between generations, between permanent residents and summer visitors, between learned music and daily life, contributing to making Penmarc'h a place of vibrant and shared culture.
The 13th edition of the Rencontres Musicales de Penmarc'h will take place from July 15th to August 3rd, 2026, in the Pays Bigouden (Finistère). « Reimagined, anchored in the heart of Penmarc'h », this edition takes over unexpected venues — the lighthouse, the Madeleine chapel, bistros, galleries, markets, and retirement homes — for about twenty days of concerts, workshops, and shows shared with the residents.
From July 15th to August 3rd, 2026, the Rencontres Musicales de Penmarc'h return for their 13th edition, focused on proximity: « Reimagined, anchored, in the heart of Penmarc'h ». The festival moves beyond its usual venues and takes over unexpected places — the lighthouse transformed into a bandstand, the Madeleine chapel, bistros, galleries, markets, and retirement homes — to meet residents and summer visitors.
The festival is organized by the PALM (Piano à la Madeleine) association, which programs concerts, practical workshops, and participatory shows throughout the summer. The detailed program, which varies each evening, is announced progressively on the official website rmpenmarch.com and the online ticketing platform.
Beyond the concerts, the 2026 edition offers several participatory highlights: the Madeleine Académie (music academy), an Éphémère Choir open to all, and a musical workshop-show bringing together about forty young performers for a family creation at the festival's closing.
The complete concert program (variable each evening) is published throughout the summer on rmpenmarch.com and the Billetweb ticketing platform.
