Breton culture festival in Plomodiern
The Festival du Menez-Hom was born in 1959, when a group of friends launched the idea of a small folk festival at the summit of Menez-Hom, an emblematic mountain in Finistère rising to 330 meters. What was just a modest village festival on August 15th has become, over sixty years, one of the oldest and most respected Breton culture festivals in Brittany.
The Festival du Menez-Hom unfolds over two full weeks, from August 1st to 15th. The program includes painting and sculpture exhibitions (with around 35 painters and 9 sculptors in the village hall), concerts, music instrument discovery workshops, children's mornings with dance, puzzles, and embroidery, and of course, the unmissable fest-noz. The free fest-noz on August 13th is a particularly appreciated moment.
August 15th is the highlight of the festival. Starting at 11 am, a grand parade winds through the center of Plomodiern, bringing together several bagadoù (bagads from Plomodiern, Spézet, Landerneau, Ergué-Gabéric, Malestroit, Pouldergat) and Celtic circles (Spézet, Breton champion 2023, Châteaulin, Saint-Evarzec, Plonéour-Lanvern, as well as the Plomodiern dance group and the gabares from Ploéven). This colorful spectacle brings together hundreds of musicians and dancers in traditional costumes.
Organized by the Association du Festival du Menez-Hom, the festival has evolved over the decades while preserving its authenticity. Once held at the summit of Menez-Hom, it now takes place in the center of Plomodiern. Each year, innovations ensure the continuity of this major local summer event: exhibitions, concerts, parades, shows, and fest-noz punctuate these two weeks of Breton celebration at the foot of the sacred mountain.
