Ancestral Catalan tradition inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Heritage list
The Fête de l'Ours d'Arles-sur-Tech is an ancestral festive practice that takes place every year at the beginning of February in the village of Arles-sur-Tech, in the heart of Haut-Vallespir in the Pyrénées-Orientales. Stemming from the myth of Jean de l'Ours, this festival is an initiation rite celebrating the renewal of spring and fertility. The "bears", embodied by villagers covered in skins and smeared with soot, are hunted through the streets by hunters before being captured, shaved, and judged in the village square. Inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list since November 29, 2022, the Fête de l'Ours is part of a cycle of three festivals with Prats-de-Mollo-la-Preste and Saint-Laurent-de-Cerdans.
The Fête de l'Ours d'Arles-sur-Tech is one of the oldest carnival traditions in the Catalan Pyrenees. Every first Sunday in February, the village of Arles-sur-Tech, nestled deep in the Tech valley in Haut-Vallespir, comes alive with collective fervor around the mythical figure of the bear.
The festival draws its origins from the myth of Jean de l'Ours, a Pyrenean legend telling the story of a child born from the union of a woman abducted by a bear. This founding narrative symbolizes the passage from wildness to civilization, from winter to spring, from animal to human. The festival is thus a rite of passage and renewal deeply rooted in Catalan culture.
The day begins with a hunters' breakfast at the communal hall, followed by the parade of the Trobada dels caçaires, the Roseta, and the Trappeur through the village streets. Sardanes dances punctuate the morning, then a communal meal brings together villagers and visitors. The afternoon is dedicated to the Great Bear Hunt: the "bears", covered in animal skins and their faces blackened with soot, terrorize the streets by marking young women's faces with ash. Hunters pursue them until the final capture, followed by the bear-shaving ceremony, after which the bear regains its human form.
On November 29, 2022, the Fêtes de l'Ours in the Pyrenees of Andorra and France were inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. This recognition highlights the importance of these living traditions that mobilize local communities, from children to elders, in a spirit of transmission and Catalan identity pride.
