The Louée: A Slice of Rural History Resurrected
The Fête de la Louée in Moulins-Engilbert is a unique heritage event that revives the tradition of the louée des domestiques (hiring of servants), these hiring fairs that took place in French rural towns until the mid-20th century. During these gatherings, servants such as valets, maids, shepherds, and reapers were hired for the upcoming season.
Emblems of the Trades
Each specialty had its distinctive emblem that the servant wore to be recognized:
- The ear of wheat designated the reaper
- The wool fleece signaled the shepherd
- The farmhand wore a whip around his neck
- The stable boy displayed an oak leaf
- The chambermaid pinned a rose to her bodice
- The lady's maid pinned a rose to her bodice
An Entire Village on Stage
On the day of the festival, the inhabitants of Moulins-Engilbert become actors and passionately recreate the trades and gestures of the past. Period shops and workshops are recreated in the village streets:
- Baker, wigmaker, herbalist
- Soda fountain owner, itinerant grocer, cheesemonger
- Rake maker, carpenter, blacksmith
- Clog maker, weaver, laundress
Reenactment of the Fair
The fair itself is faithfully recreated based on the testimonies of elders who experienced the last hiring fairs in the 1940s. Negotiations between employers and servants are performed in period costume, offering visitors a lively and moving spectacle.
A Tribute to the Rural World
The Fête de la Louée is much more than a simple folk show: it is a true tribute to the rural world and its traditions. It highlights the socio-cultural life of a country village around 1900, with its trades, customs, social relationships, and conviviality.
Moulins-Engilbert, Land of Livestock Farming
Moulins-Engilbert, a town nestled in the heart of southern Morvan, is historically linked to the breeding of Charolais cattle. The municipality hosts one of the largest livestock markets in France, which gives a particular resonance to this reenactment of rural traditions.
