The village festival around the Saint-Jean bonfire
Every year at the end of June, Marnes-la-Coquette celebrates Saint John's Day with an authentic village festival bringing together all its inhabitants. A torchlight procession, brass band, friendly buffet, and fireworks liven up the summer night in this charming village of 1,700 inhabitants nestled at the edge of the Bois de Fausses-Reposes, in the Hauts-de-Seine.
Marnes-la-Coquette is one of the smallest municipalities in metropolitan France with about 1,700 inhabitants, and yet one of the most endearing. Nestled between the Fausses-Reposes woods, Versailles, and Saint-Cloud, it has managed to preserve its village character while belonging to the Parisian agglomeration. And nothing symbolizes this village spirit better than the Fête de la Saint-Jean, celebrated every year around the summer solstice.
The Fête de la Saint-Jean is a millennial European tradition, inherited from the solar rites of the summer solstice. It is associated with John the Baptist, whose nativity is celebrated on June 24th according to the liturgical calendar. In Marnes-la-Coquette, this tradition has been adopted and carefully cultivated by the municipality, making it one of the highlights of its annual festive life.
The Saint-Jean evening begins at dusk, generally around 9 PM, and follows an unchanging program that is the charm of the tradition. The event opens with a torchlight procession led by the brass band from the École Normale Supérieure de Paris-Saclay, which parades through the village streets with music, creating a magical and popular atmosphere.
The luminous procession leads participants to the central location of the festival, where a convivial buffet is set up, allowing everyone to gather over a drink and homemade cakes. The spirit of mutual aid and sharing is at the heart of this moment: residents are invited to bring their culinary preparations, thus perpetuating a tradition of shared cooking.
The highlight of the evening is undoubtedly the fireworks display, set off at 11 PM from the village's central square. Visible from the heights of the Fausses-Reposes woods, it concludes the Saint-Jean night in general jubilation.
Marnes-la-Coquette boasts remarkable architectural and natural heritage. A large part of its territory is wooded, encompassing part of the Fausses-Reposes woods, classified as a protected forest. The municipality is home to several grand houses from the 19th and 20th centuries, testaments to its select residential past, as well as the Institut Pasteur de Marnes, a research institution founded in the early 20th century.
The Fête de la Saint-Jean is part of this exceptional setting, both close to Paris and preserved from its hustle and bustle. It reflects an intense and well-organized local life, driven by dynamic associations and a town hall attentive to the quality of life of its inhabitants.
In addition to the Saint-Jean, Marnes-la-Coquette also organizes the Fête de la Sainte-Eugénie, the patron saint of the municipality, generally in December. Two moments of community gathering that punctuate the festive calendar of this atypical village in the Hauts-de-Seine.
