The popular festival of Éragny-sur-Oise, Camille Pissarro's town
The Fête d'Éragny celebrates every summer the festive and community life of this town in the Val-d'Oise made famous by the impressionist painter Camille Pissarro, who lived there from 1884 to 1903. Concerts, family entertainment, shows, and community stands liven up the public spaces of Éragny for several days of popular festivities. This festival is a gathering moment for the inhabitants of a dynamic town on the outskirts of Cergy-Pontoise.
The Fête d'Éragny takes place in a town in the Val-d'Oise that holds a special place in the history of French art. Camille Pissarro (1830-1903), one of the founders of Impressionism and a leading figure of this revolutionary artistic movement, lived in Éragny-sur-Oise from 1884 until his death in 1903. For twenty years, he passionately painted the landscapes of the Oise valley, the orchards, the fields, and the surrounding villages, creating a significant part of his colossal work in Éragny.
Today, Éragny-sur-Oise is a modern and dynamic town in the Cergy-Pontoise agglomeration, which has not forgotten its artistic past. Its annual festival reflects this vibrant and diverse community.
The Fête d'Éragny offers a program spread over a weekend, or even several days depending on the edition. On the menu: concerts by local and regional bands covering various musical styles, entertainment for children (inflatable structures, games, creative workshops), street performances, food stalls, and stands run by the town's associations.
The festival is also an opportunity to highlight the town's Impressionist heritage. Guided tours retracing Pissarro's footsteps, exhibitions of reproductions of his works painted in Éragny, and conferences on his work may complement the festive program depending on the edition. Pissarro's family home, now private property, still bears witness to his presence in the village.
It should be noted that Éragny here refers to Éragny-sur-Oise, the historic town where Pissarro lived, distinct from the former commune of Éragny (now merged into Cergy). The festival takes place in this town on the banks of the Oise, which retains its village character despite its integration into the agglomeration.
