The Fête du Cheval Percheron: A tribute to the giant of Perche

The Percheron horse, one of the most famous draft horse breeds in the world, originates from the natural region of Perche, which stretches between Eure-et-Loir, Orne, and Loir-et-Cher. It is in Thiron-Gardais, in the very heart of this historic territory, that the Fête du Cheval Percheron is held annually, an event that pays homage to this magnificent animal and the people who continue its breeding.

A program dedicated to equestrian art

The festival takes place in the prestigious setting of the Domaine de l'Abbaye in Thiron-Gardais, around August 15th. The program showcases all facets of the Percheron horse through stud presentations, where breeders proudly parade their finest specimens. Spectators admire the power and elegance of these horses, which can weigh over a ton.

Logging demonstrations recall the essential role the Percheron played in forestry work. Pas de deux and dressage figures demonstrate the docility and intelligence of these big-hearted giants. An exhibition of horse-drawn vehicles, both old and modern, traces the history of horse-drawn transport.

The Percheron, a living heritage

An emblematic breed developed from the Middle Ages in the hills of Perche, the Percheron horse achieved global fame in the 19th century, exported by the tens of thousands to the United States, Canada, and South America. After a dramatic decline with agricultural mechanization in the 20th century, the breed is experiencing a revival driven by passionate breeders who defend this living heritage.

The Société Hippique Percheronne de France, founded in 1883, oversees the breed's studbook and encourages valorization initiatives. The Fête du Cheval Percheron de Thiron-Gardais fully participates in this effort by introducing the public to the exceptional beauty and qualities of this animal.

An event rooted in the territory

Thiron-Gardais, a charming small town in Perche, offers an ideal setting for this celebration. The Domaine de l'Abbaye, with its historic gardens and monastic buildings, provides a remarkable heritage backdrop. Visitors can take the opportunity to discover the abbey founded in the 12th century, its gardens, and its museum.

The first edition, organized on August 15, 2022, attracted over 4,500 visitors, confirming public interest in this type of heritage and equestrian event. The event has since become itinerant, held in various locations in Perche, such as La Ferté-Vidame.
