Five days of popular celebration in Commentry
The Fête du Vijon is the major festive event in Commentry, the blacksmith city of the Allier. Created in 1990, this popular event marks the end of summer each year with five days of festivities: torchlight procession, street shows, brass bands, concerts, flea market, soapbox derby, parade of flowery floats, and fireworks. Organized by the City of Commentry and OMPAC, the Vijon brings together all generations around a free and friendly program.
The word "Vijon", in the Bourbonnais dialect, refers to a country fair gathering that took place on Sundays after mass. It is in this spirit of conviviality and sharing that the Fête du Vijon was born in 1990 in Commentry, a former mining and blacksmithing town in the Allier. For over thirty-five years, this event has marked the end of summer and brings together residents, families, and visitors for five days of free festivities in the streets of the town.
Each edition of the Vijon begins with an official opening featuring a balloon release and confetti distribution in front of the municipal theater. On Friday evening, the traditional torchlight procession winds through the streets of Commentry, punctuated by pyrotechnic shows and musical parades. Saturday is dedicated to the giant flea market, the soapbox derby, and concerts in the town center. On Sunday afternoon, the famous parade of flowery floats takes over the streets, enlivened by brass bands and musical groups. The fireworks display, launched from the Agora plain, concludes the festivities in grand style.
Over the years, the Vijon has enriched its program with street performances, roaming brass bands, and humorous acts. Troupes such as Les Krapos, Fanfare Express, Banda B.7, or Band of Queen have enlivened the streets of Commentry. The funfair sets up for four days in front of the town hall, offering rides and attractions for families. Sports activities—cycling races, inflatable games—complete the program.
The Vijon is organized by the City of Commentry and the OMPAC (Municipal Office for Animation and Culture), under the direction of programmer Vincent Brun. Entirely free, this event relies on the mobilization of municipal services, local associations, and a team of volunteers who contribute to making this popular festival a moment of cohesion and pride for the town of Commentry.
The 36th edition of the Fête du Vijon is scheduled from August 21 to 24, 2026, in Commentry. The City and OMPAC offer four days of festivities with street arts, brass bands, concerts, flea market, parade of flowery floats, cycling race, and fireworks.
