The Fêtes d'Angresse: festival at the crossroads of Landes and Basque Country

Located a few kilometers from the Atlantic coast and the border with the Basque Country, the village of Angresse occupies a unique geographical position in the south of the Landes department. This commune of about 2,000 inhabitants, nestled between Capbreton to the southwest and Bénesse-Maremne to the north, celebrates its local festivals every summer with the fervor that characterizes this meeting point of two of France's richest festive cultures.

Four days of celebration in July

The Fêtes d'Angresse take place over four days in July, offering a dense and varied program. Each day is marked by entertainment from morning to night, blending Landes traditions, local gastronomy, and shared festive moments. The village, usually peaceful, transforms into a gathering place where permanent residents, second-home owners, and passing vacationers mingle.

Bandas and brass bands, the engine of the festivities

Bandas and brass bands are omnipresent throughout the four days of celebration. These traveling brass bands parade through the streets of Angresse, playing lively tunes that set the village in motion. From early morning breakfast to evening dances, their festive and infectious music is the common thread of the festivities, creating a joyful soundscape that permeates every corner of the village.

Gastronomy and festive meals

Country meals are a highlight of the Fêtes d'Angresse. Local associations offer generous menus featuring specialties from the Landes and Basque regions: piperade, axoa, chipirons, grilled magret, duck confit, and Basque cake. These outdoor feasts, set up in the village square or under marquees, bring together hundreds of guests in an atmosphere of sharing and indulgence. The proximity to the Basque Country enriches the gastronomic offerings with cross-cultural culinary influences.

Landes races and bullfighting tradition

The Landes races are part of the Fêtes d'Angresse program, perpetuating the department's bullfighting tradition. In the arenas or the specially arranged square, the 'écarteurs' (bull dodgers) confront the Landes cows in a spectacle combining bravery and elegance. These races are accompanied by the bandas, whose music punctuates each dodge and each jump, creating an electric atmosphere.

Popular dances and festive evenings

The evenings of the Fêtes d'Angresse are enlivened by popular dances, concerts, and musical entertainment that continue until the early morning. The musical diversity—from traditional music to popular hits, including current rhythms—allows every generation to find something they enjoy. The bars and food stalls, open late into the night, are places for reunions and conviviality where festival memories are made.

Sports and family activities

The program includes sports tournaments (pétanque, Basque pelota), children's games, and street entertainment, making these festivals a complete family event. The daytime activities, accessible and free, allow everyone to participate in the festive atmosphere, from the youngest to the oldest.
