The Fêtes de Pissos: Pentecost in Haute Lande

In the heart of Haute Lande, a vast expanse of maritime pine forest that forms the green lung of the department, the village of Pissos celebrates its Pentecost festival for five days each year. Located between the two branches of the Leyre, this small river that winds through the Landes forest, Pissos is a village of about 1,300 inhabitants that comes alive for these festivities, driven by a remarkably dynamic network of associations.

A Program Driven by Associations

The originality of the Fêtes de Pissos lies in the exceptional mobilization of local associations. The Cercle de l'Union, the ACCA (Communal Approved Hunting Association), the AGC, the Vélo Club, Pissos Pétanque Loisir, the Amicale des Retraités (Retireds' Club), and the Bouchon des 2 Leyre take turns throughout the five days to offer their own events and meals. This collaborative organization reflects a rich and supportive community life.

Musical and Dancing Evenings

The evenings of the Fêtes de Pissos are enlivened by live concerts and popular dances. On Friday evening, the Cercle de l'Union organizes a mussels and fries meal followed by a musical evening with a local band. Popular dances, a traditional must of Landes village festivals, bring all generations together on the dance floor until the end of the night.

Gastronomy and Conviviality

Meals are at the heart of the Fêtes de Pissos, and each association offers its specialties. On Friday evening, the Cercle serves a mussels and fries with dessert meal at a reasonable price. On Saturday lunchtime, the pétanque competition is preceded by a convivial meal of marinated pork with fries. On Monday, the garburo-concert aperitif offers the traditional garbure accompanied by confit and potatoes, all with music from local artists like Sax in Land and Rémy Ladoré. These outdoor gatherings, where meals are shared in good spirits, are the soul of these village festivals.

The Retireds' Club Tea Dance

The tea dance organized by the Amicale des Retraités is a warm moment of the festival, where the village elders rediscover the pleasure of dancing and music in a friendly atmosphere. Led by local musicians, this intergenerational event is emblematic of Pissos' community spirit.

Sports and Outdoor Activities

The sports component of the Fêtes de Pissos includes a ball-trap organized by the ACCA on Sunday on the road to Sore, a pétanque competition on Saturday afternoon organized by Pissos Pétanque Loisir, and outdoor activities related to the commune's forest environment. These sports and leisure activities complement a program that offers something for everyone to enjoy during the long Pentecost weekend.
