Every year at the end of July, the town of Orthez comes alive for four days for its patronal festival, a festive event that brings together residents and visitors around traditions rooted in the culture of the Southwest. The Fêtes d'Orthez are among the most anticipated events in Béarn and are a highlight of the summer in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.
The festivities offer an eclectic program combining bullfighting traditions, music, gastronomy, and entertainment for all ages. Landes races and novilladas perpetuate the Béarnaise bullfighting tradition, while bandas fill the streets with their lively melodies. Open-air concerts feature a varied musical program, from local groups to nationally renowned artists.
During the Fêtes d'Orthez, the medieval city transforms into a vast space of revelry. Squares and streets host bodegas, food stalls, and pop-up bars where local specialties are served. The friendly and warm atmosphere characteristic of Southwest festivals fills every corner of the city, from the Pont Vieux to the bullring, via the historic squares.
Former capital of Béarn in the Middle Ages, Orthez offers a remarkable heritage setting for these festivities. The Tour Moncade, a remnant of the castle of the viscounts of Béarn, and the famous fortified Pont Vieux over the Gave de Pau provide a striking backdrop for the entertainment. The festivals also offer an opportunity to discover this historic city while enjoying moments of sharing and conviviality.
