About Feu d'Artifice de Rogny

Since 1967, the Rogny-les-Sept-Écluses Festival Committee has organized one of the three most beautiful fireworks displays in France every late July. The Ruggieri company, master pyrotechnicians since 1739, lights up the sky of Puisaye for an hour above the 17th-century seven locks, a listed Historic Monument. Synchronized to an original soundtrack, this extraordinary pyromelodic show attracts up to 20,000 spectators from all over France each year.

One of the biggest pyrotechnic shows in France

Every last Saturday in July, Rogny-les-Sept-Écluses transforms into an open-air theater of exceptional scale. The Feu d'Artifice de Rogny, created in 1967, is now considered by pyrotechnics professionals as one of the three most beautiful fireworks displays in France. Far from a simple national holiday firework, it is a true total show that combines high-precision pyrotechnics and synchronized music on a natural stage 300 meters wide, overlooking the Briare canal and its centuries-old locks.

The Ruggieri company, a dynasty of pyrotechnicians founded in 1739 and responsible for, among other things, the illuminations of the Eiffel Tower on July 14th in Paris, designs the pyromelodic scenario each year. One ton of gunpowder, eight computerized consoles, 350 electronic firing systems, and pyrotechnic effects launched to the tenth of a second: the show lasts one hour without interruption, under the direction of a seasoned firing chief who admits to feeling stage fright before each launch.

A unique heritage site in Burgundy

The setting for the show is a journey through history in itself. The Seven Locks of Rogny are one of the most ambitious hydraulic achievements of the French Ancien Régime. Conceived on the initiative of Henri IV and the Duke of Sully as early as 1597, this gigantic staircase of locks was designed by the hydraulic engineer Hugues Cosnier to overcome a 24-meter drop and connect the Loire basin to the Seine basin, thus opening the Paris-Mediterranean waterway. The work mobilized up to 12,000 workers and 6,000 soldiers before being interrupted by the assassination of Henri IV in 1610; the Briare canal was finally opened to navigation in 1642.

The staircase of seven contiguous locks—each 28 meters long and 4.80 meters wide—has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1983. Now decommissioned since the construction of the lateral canal in the 19th century, it is an intact architectural testament to remarkable pre-industrial engineering, and attracts thousands of visitors each summer to this small village in Puisaye, at the crossroads of the Yonne, Loiret, and Nièvre regions.

The show and its organization

Behind the magic of the show lies a collective effort of rare intensity. No fewer than 300 volunteers prepare the event throughout the year. On the day, traffic is closed from noon in the entire village, which becomes pedestrianized to welcome a public arriving by car, camper van, and coach from all over France.

The afternoon and early evening are enlivened by concerts, brass bands, inflatable structures, face painting workshops, and games for children. From 8:00 PM, musical entertainment is in full swing around the lock site, creating a popular festival atmosphere where families, pyrotechnics enthusiasts, and proud locals mingle. The crowd takes its place on the lawn or in the stands from 9:00 PM, before the pyromelodic show begins at 10:45 PM with the first notes of the soundtrack.

Each edition has its own narrative theme, imagined and set to music in collaboration with the Ruggieri company. In 2025, the 57th edition was titled “The Soul of Superheroes”, paying tribute to fictional superheroes and everyday heroes—firefighters, healthcare workers, volunteers—in a symphony of colorful flashes and rhythmic explosions. The 58th edition will take place on Saturday, July 25, 2026.

A family-friendly, popular, and free event with open access

Access to the lawn starts at €18 for adults (free for children under 10 with proof of age), while reserved stands and seats are offered at higher prices. PMR areas are provided for accessibility. Online reservations allow for a €1 saving per ticket.

The show is held regardless of weather conditions, a tradition rooted for decades that commands the admiration of spectators and volunteers alike. The village of Rogny-les-Sept-Écluses, with only about 700 inhabitants year-round, sees its population multiply by more than twenty for one July night, in a communion of heritage, celebration, and exceptional fireworks.

Ruggieri: a legendary pyrotechnics house

The Ruggieri company is one of the oldest pyrotechnician dynasties in the world. Founded in 1739 by Gaetano Ruggieri, it served the French court under Louis XV and Louis XVI, and has perpetuated for three centuries a unique know-how in spectacular pyrotechnics. It is responsible for the fireworks display on the Champ-de-Mars in Paris every July 14th and illuminates the Eiffel Tower. Entrusting the Rogny show to the Ruggieri company for over half a century testifies to the ambition of the Festival Committee and the now national reputation of this event rooted in Puisaye.
