The great champagne sauerkraut festival in the heart of the Aube
The Fête de la Choucroute in Brienne-le-Château is a gastronomic and agricultural fair-exposition that celebrates champagne sauerkraut each year in September, an emblematic specialty of the Aube, the second national producer of sauerkraut. For over sixty-five years, this popular and free event has attracted some 15,000 visitors for tastings, a cattle competition, over 100 exhibitors, and festive entertainment in the streets of the Napoleonic city.
For over 65 years, the Fête de la Choucroute of Brienne-le-Château has celebrated an emblematic product of the Aube region: champagne sauerkraut. The Aube is indeed the second largest national producer of sauerkraut, and this festival pays tribute to this ancestral know-how by offering generous tastings prepared by local restaurateurs and caterers, particularly under the Halle and in the city's restaurants.
Every third weekend in September, the streets of Brienne-le-Château transform into a vast agricultural and commercial fair. Over 100 exhibitors take over the town center: craft artisans, local producers, merchants, and associations animate the different areas of the event. The Crafts Pavilion brings together about fifteen creator artisans on Rue du Pont, while the commercial and agricultural fair unfolds in the adjacent streets.
A highlight of the event, the Prim' Holstein cattle competition brings together breeders from the Aube, Côte-d'Or, Haute-Marne, Yonne, Loiret, Marne, and Seine-et-Marne regions on the Place de la Foire aux Bêtes. This competition perpetuates the agricultural vocation of the event and demonstrates the dynamism of livestock farming in the Grand Est region.
With around 15,000 visitors each year, the Fête de la Choucroute is one of the unmissable events of the Aube autumn. The event is completely free and offers numerous activities: vintage car exhibitions, folk shows, music, and entertainment for the whole family. Conviviality and generosity are the watchwords of this popular festival that brings together gourmets, the curious, and lovers of the Champagne region's terroir.
The 67th edition of the Fête de la Choucroute is expected in September 2026 in Brienne-le-Château. The event will continue its celebration of champagne sauerkraut with a fair-exposition, cattle competition, and popular entertainment.
