The great medieval festival of the 13th-century bastide in Lot-et-Garonne
The Medieval Festival of Monflanquin transforms this magnificent 13th-century bastide into a real medieval village every year for a weekend around August 15th. Organized by the Groupe Expression Monflanquin (GEM) for over 30 years, it features knight tournaments, fire shows, a medieval market, troubadours, fire-eaters, jugglers, stilt walkers, and a banquet in the alleys and squares of the town. This festive and family-friendly event attracts thousands of visitors each year.
Every year around August 15th, the bastide of Monflanquin, founded in 1256 by Alphonse de Poitiers, brother of King Saint Louis, transforms into an extraordinary medieval setting. The Medieval Festival of Monflanquin, organized by the Groupe Expression Monflanquin (GEM), is more than just a historical reenactment: it's a true immersion into the world of the Middle Ages, driven by over a hundred passionate artists and volunteers.
For two days, the alleys, squares, and arcades of the bastide come alive to the rhythm of fighting knights, singing and dancing troubadours, fire-eaters, jugglers, stilt walkers, and other fantastic characters who transport young and old back to the heart of the Middle Ages.
The knight tournaments are one of the festival's highlights. Specialized companies like Drakonia present spectacular horse fights, jousts, and medieval weapon demonstrations. Equestrian shows combine acrobatic prowess and historical staging.
As night falls, the bastide lights up with grand fire shows. The company Les Dernières Amazones notably presented its show "Genèse" at the 2025 edition, offering a moment of magic and enchantment with breathtaking fire performances.
The medieval market brings together many artisans offering period objects, jewelry, forged weapons, costumes, and local products. Introduction workshops on stone carving, calligraphy, and rope making allow visitors to discover medieval know-how.
A medieval tavern welcomes visitors for meals and drinks in a medieval atmosphere. A grand closing banquet brings together costumed guests for an unforgettable festive evening. Six village associations participate in organizing the catering.
Monflanquin, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, offers a unique heritage setting for this event. Founded in the 13th century, the town retains its characteristic checkerboard layout, its arcades, its central square, and its medieval alleys, which provide an authentic and grand backdrop for the festival.
The Medieval Festival of Monflanquin is designed to welcome a wide family audience. Access to the village and street entertainment is free. Paid shows (tournaments, fire shows) are offered at affordable prices. GEM also provides over 800 medieval costumes for rent, made by its volunteer sewing workshop, allowing everyone to blend into the atmosphere.
