Poetic and luminous walk in the park of the Château d'Azay-le-Rideau with glass projections
The Flânerie Nocturne is a poetic and luminous walk offered every summer in the park of the Château d'Azay-le-Rideau. Designed by the company Lumière de Verre, this installation uses a unique artisanal technique of projection from hot-worked glass plates, a legacy of the magic lantern tradition. At nightfall, the Renaissance facades of the château are adorned with dreamlike images projected from these blown glass plates, creating an enchanting visual spectacle that magnifies the architecture of the jewel of the Indre.
Every summer, the Château d'Azay-le-Rideau offers its Flânerie Nocturne, a luminous and poetic walk designed by the company Lumière de Verre. This artistic creation uses a technique unique in France: hot-worked glass plates, inspired by 19th-century magic lanterns, serve as a support for monumental projections on the facades of the Renaissance château.
The company Lumière de Verre has developed a blown glass projection technique that blends glassmaking craftsmanship and light art. The colored glass plates, created artisanally in the company's workshop, are crossed by light beams that project moving and colorful images onto the château walls. The result is a highly poetic visual spectacle, with warm colors and organic shapes, which radically distinguishes itself from digital projections through its artisanal texture and dreamlike character.
Visitors stroll at their own pace through the château park, discovering the various projection points arranged around the building. The reflections of the château in the Indre river add an extra dimension to the spectacle, doubling the projected images in a play of aquatic mirrors. The route, accessible from 7:30 PM but fully visible at nightfall, offers a contemplative and soothing experience in one of the most beautiful sites in the Loire Valley.
The Château d'Azay-le-Rideau, built between 1518 and 1527 on an island in the Indre river, is a masterpiece of French Renaissance architecture. Owned by the Centre des monuments nationaux, it is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of the Loire Valley. The Flânerie Nocturne allows visitors to discover this monument from a new perspective, in the gentle summer nights of Touraine.
In 2025, the Flânerie Nocturne is part of the 500th-anniversary celebrations of the château's construction by Gilles Berthelot and Philippe Lesbahy. This exceptional program enriches the château's summer cultural offerings alongside the immersive show La Conjuration d'Azay.
The Flânerie Nocturne 2026 will take place from mid-July to the end of August at the Château d'Azay-le-Rideau with artisanal light projections on the Renaissance facades of the château.
The Flânerie Nocturne will return to the Château d'Azay-le-Rideau in July-August 2026. Dates, times, and prices to be confirmed on the château's website.
