The centuries-old funfair and patronal festival of the Pithiverais
Pithiviers' centuries-old patronal festival, the Foire de la Saint-Georges is the largest fair in northern Loiret. Every year in April, over 80 fairground operators take over the town center with rides and attractions for all ages. For three days, concerts, a flea market, a producers' market, educational farms, a brotherhoods' village, a wool festival, and the awarding of the Best Pithiviers prize liven up the pedestrian streets. A free, family-friendly event, this traditional fair brings Pithivériens together in a festive and friendly atmosphere.
The Foire de la Saint-Georges is a centuries-old event in Pithiviers, Loiret. Originally an agricultural fair, it has evolved over the centuries to become one of the most important festive events in the Loiret department, just after the Orléans funfair. Every year in April, on the occasion of the feast of Saint George, the town's patron saint, Pithiviers comes alive for three days in an atmosphere of popular jubilation that brings all generations together.
The heart of the Foire de la Saint-Georges is its monumental funfair. More than 80 professionals from the funfair industry set up on Place de Gaulle, Chantoiseau, Mail Sud, and the surrounding streets, transforming the town center into a vast open-air amusement park. Rides for toddlers, thrill rides for older children, games of skill and chance, bumper cars, a Ferris wheel, and candy stalls: there's something for every taste and age. The fairground area is entirely pedestrianized for the comfort and safety of visitors.
The Foire de la Saint-Georges highlights the gastronomy and local produce of the Pithiverais and Loiret regions. A brotherhoods' village brings together regional brotherhoods, including the famous Confrérie du Pithiviers, who offer tastings of the dishes they are proud of. The producers' market allows visitors to discover local products: Gâtinais honey, saffron, cheeses, cured meats, and traditional pastries. On-site catering offers the opportunity to savor local specialties in a friendly atmosphere.
A highlight of the fair, the awarding of the Best Pithiviers prize celebrates the town's emblematic pastry. This flaky almond cake, an ancestral specialty of the Pithiverais, is the pride of the region's artisan bakers and pastry chefs. The competition, organized by the Confrérie du Pithiviers, rewards know-how and perpetuates a centuries-old gourmet tradition. Recently, Pithiviers prepared with 100% local almonds, from the revival of almond cultivation in the Pithiverais, have been participating in the competition.
Now an unmissable event, the educational farms occupy the Mail Ouest with an expanded area each year. Domestic and unusual animals delight families and allow children to discover the rural world. The three-day program also includes concerts, street shows—trumpet, barrel organ, bolas, guitar—, creative workshops, a flea market, a wool festival bringing together knitters, and an exhibition of vintage vehicles with a parade on Sunday. The OCAIP artisans' village, located Place du Martroi, offers commercial meetings and a stage area hosting entertainment throughout the fair.
The Foire de la Saint-Georges is more than just a funfair: it's the event that brings together all the people of Pithiviers and the inhabitants of the Grand Pithiverais. Supported by the Regional Council Centre-Val de Loire, the Departmental Council of Loiret, and partners like the radio station Vibration, this free and open-to-all fair embodies the festive identity and dynamism of Pithiviers. A adapted free bus service is provided throughout the event, and reinforced security measures ensure visitors' peace of mind.
