Street arts in Bessines-sur-Gartempe
Since 1999, the Graines de Rue Festival has made Bessines-sur-Gartempe, a small town in northern Haute-Vienne, a must-visit hub for street arts in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Founded by the eponymous association under the impetus of performing arts enthusiasts, the festival's name reflects its philosophy: to sow "seeds" of culture, emotion, and curiosity among all audiences, by using public spaces as an artistic playground.
Every year, on the Pentecost weekend, the streets, squares, and gardens of Bessines-sur-Gartempe transform into a vast open-air theater. From the Centre Gérard Philipe, the festival's nerve center, to the smallest alleyways of the town, art invades every corner. For four days, about twenty professional companies from Nouvelle-Aquitaine and beyond offer an eclectic program mixing street theater, contemporary circus, puppetry, object theater, dance, and music. Bold creations coexist with more intimate forms, always with the requirement of close-up live performance.
The deep originality of Graines de Rue lies in the place given to youth. More than 300 young amateur artists, the "seeds," from Haute-Vienne and neighboring departments, take to the same stages as professionals to present their creations. In the lead-up to the festival, cultural outreach programs and workshops are conducted with schoolchildren, offering children an introduction to the performing arts and a critical perspective on creation. This civic and educational approach makes the festival a true laboratory for training and transmission, recognized as a center for artistic diffusion and training by cultural institutions.
With its shows being mostly free – paid performances are offered between 5 and 15 euros depending on the companies – Graines de Rue cultivates a resolutely popular and accessible spirit. Each edition attracts over 9,000 spectators, including 2,500 children during dedicated school days. The festival village offers food, drinks, and entertainment, creating a warm and friendly atmosphere. Supported by the Région Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the DRAC, and local authorities, the festival has become a major player in the cultural life of northern Haute-Vienne, proving that street art can shine far beyond major cities.
The Graines de Rue Festival is preparing its 28th edition in Bessines-sur-Gartempe. Join us from May 21st to 24th, 2026, to discover the new street arts program. Young artists and professional companies will once again gather in the town's streets to celebrate live performance in the open air.
