Edition 2026

Carnaval Sauvage — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Carnaval Sauvage in Faux-la-Montagne, organized by local residents and the Par la Racine association as part of the Samaïn festival. The nocturnal procession pays tribute to the departed by celebrating the altars set up by residents outside their homes along a route through the village.

Since the 2023 dissolution of the Constance Social Club, which historically hosted the event, the Carnaval Sauvage has continued thanks to the efforts of local residents and the Par la Racine association. It takes place during the Samaïn, a series of gatherings focused on death and mourning held on the Millevaches plateau. The procession invites the people of Faux-la-Montagne to create altars for their loved ones outside their homes—featuring dried flowers, candles, photographs, and offerings—which the carnival celebrates as it winds through the village streets. In 2025, the procession departed at 6:00 PM from the Place de la Fontaine. As of mid-August 2026, the specific date, time, and detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been released by the organizers; announcements are typically made in the final days of October.

An atypical carnival on the Plateau de Millevaches

The Carnaval Sauvage is one of the two major events that mark the life of the Constance Social Club, a social and cultural association located in the village of Faux-la-Montagne, on the Plateau de Millevaches. Every year at the end of October, this artistic and popular carnival offers a unique experience combining creation, costumes, and festivities.

Costume workshops and parade

In the lead-up to the carnival, workshops for making costumes and masks are offered to everyone, allowing participants to prepare their outfits with the help of artists. On the day, a costumed parade starts at 4 PM, accompanied by a batucada that electrifies the streets of the upper village. The creations are often inspired by the wild nature of the plateau, as well as popular tales and myths.

Festive evening and spirit of meeting

After the parade, the Constance Social Club opens its doors for a festive evening with food and concerts open to all. The Carnaval Sauvage aims to be a broad meeting time where association members, neighbors, plateau residents, and visitors from elsewhere come together. The artist Anna Gianferrari has contributed to the artistic dimension of the event, making the carnival a living creative project throughout the year.
