Contemporary art exhibitions on Vassivière Island
The International Centre for Art and Landscape (CIAP) of Vassivière is one of the most important contemporary art centers in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Located on Vassivière Island, in the heart of the lake, it occupies an emblematic building designed in 1991 by architects Aldo Rossi and Xavier Fabre, whose architecture dialogues with the surrounding lakeside landscape.
The CIAP programs three temporary exhibitions per year, showcasing the work of French and international contemporary artists. Each exhibition is generally accompanied by screenings, conferences, and debates that encourage the sharing of experiences and reflection on the issues of contemporary art. Since 2012, the center has also hosted an artist residency in the island's old castle.
Beyond indoor exhibitions, the CIAP houses the famous Sculpture Park, an outdoor trail composed of about sixty works installed among the forest, meadows, and lake shores. This open-air museum is one of the most important collections of contemporary outdoor sculpture in France, offering a unique artistic experience in constant dialogue with the nature and landscape of the Millevaches plateau.
The 2026 season at CIAP Vassivière will feature three temporary exhibitions of contemporary art from April to November. The Sculpture Park with its sixty outdoor works will remain freely accessible. Conferences, screenings, and debates will accompany each exhibition, and the artist residency in the island's old castle will host new creators.
