The meeting of enamel and metal in Limousin
Impertinente is a major cultural and artistic event dedicated to the art of enamel on metal, an ancestral know-how inscribed in the intangible cultural heritage of France. Supported by the French Enamellers Professional Syndicate, this multi-site event features exhibitions, introductory workshops, conferences, and guided tours throughout Limoges and the Limousin region, from June to November, bringing together around a hundred creators from around the world around this unique art of fire.
Nearly thirty years after the last edition of the Limoges International Enamel Art Biennale in 1994, the French Enamellers Professional Syndicate (SPEF) has given birth to Impertinente, a major event designed to reconnect with the Limousin enamelling tradition and project it into contemporary creation. This festival celebrates one of the historical pillars of the arts of fire in Limoges, alongside porcelain and stained glass.
Conceived as a sensitive journey that is creative, educational, and tourist-oriented, Impertinente unfolds over six months, from June to November, across five towns in the Haute-Vienne department: Limoges, Solignac, Rochechouart, Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche, and Bellac. With a dozen exhibitions, over 300 works, and nearly 100 creators from Australia, Spain, Japan, Georgia, Argentina, and Cameroon, the event highlights the creative and expressive diversity of enamel on metal.
The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Limoges (BAL), which holds a reference collection of enamels, hosts contemporary enamel artists from Europe, Asia, and North America within its permanent collections of enamels on copper. The Musée du Four des Casseaux offers demonstrations of various enamelling techniques. In Solignac, the exhibition "OVNI" pays tribute to Henri Chéron (1921-2011), a unique figure and brilliant enamel technician. The Musée d'art contemporain de Rochechouart unveils new pieces related to the art of enamel.
Beyond exhibitions, Impertinente offers introductory workshops allowing the public to try enamelling, conferences on the history and techniques of this ancient art, and guided tours to discover the enamelling heritage of Limousin. The photographer-artist Sophie Zénon invites visitors to step into the heart of an enameller's workshop to discover the technical gestures and portraits of creators.
The art of enamel on metal, recognized as intangible cultural heritage of France, is one of the oldest and most refined know-hows in Limoges. From medieval champlevé enamels to the most daring contemporary creations, Impertinente testifies to the vitality of an art that is constantly reinventing itself, driven by passionate artisans and artists.
