Musical encounters in the heritage of Limoges
Led by Ensemble Beatus and directed by Jean-Paul Rigaud, the L'Esprit des Pierres festival offers lunchtime concerts in the major heritage sites of Limoges every September. Inheriting the musical tradition of the Abbey of Saint-Martial, this event bridges medieval music and contemporary creations within historic buildings: the Chapel of the Visitation, the Church of Saint-Pierre-du-Queyroix, the Théâtre Expression, and the Simone Veil space.
Created in 2014 by the Ensemble Beatus, a group specializing in medieval music and its contemporary reinterpretation, the L'Esprit des Pierres festival has become an unmissable event in Limoges' cultural autumn. Under the artistic direction of Jean-Paul Rigaud, this series of musical encounters takes place every September, around the European Heritage Days, in Limoges' most iconic buildings.
The festival's original concept is based on the principle of lunchtime concerts: recitals of about 45 minutes scheduled at 12:30 PM, during the midday break. This accessible format allows music lovers and the curious alike to discover rare repertoires in exceptional architectural settings. Eight concerts mark each edition, taking place in historic locations: the Chapel of the Visitation, the Church of Saint-Pierre-du-Queyroix, the Théâtre Expression, and the Simone Veil space.
True to its motto "Medieval music, today's music", Ensemble Beatus rejects historical reenactment in favor of a living appropriation of ancient repertoires. The festival invites contemporary musicians to revisit the medieval musical heritage according to their own culture and sensibility, creating a dialogue between eras. The themes explored over the editions—travel and pilgrimage, canonical hours and seasons, sacred time and profane time—testify to this desire to connect past and present.
The choice of Limoges is not accidental. The city was one of the major European centers of musical creation in the Middle Ages, thanks in particular to the Abbey of Saint-Martial, whose illuminated manuscripts constitute an invaluable treasure of nascent polyphony. Renowned throughout Europe for its manuscripts, enamels, and tapestries, Limoges offers an ideal heritage setting for these ancient melodies to resonate. The festival thus contributes to the rediscovery and enhancement of this exceptional cultural heritage.
Eager to make sophisticated music accessible to the widest audience, the festival offers deliberately modest pricing: €5 per concert or a pass for €40 granting access to the entire program from four concerts onwards. This pricing policy, combined with the friendly format of the lunchtime concerts, makes L'Esprit des Pierres a true tool for cultural democratization.
