A trail in the heart of the Châteauroux forest

The Grand Trail des Salamandres takes place in the magnificent Châteauroux forest, one of the most beautiful forest areas in Berry. This forest of over 5,000 hectares, composed of oaks, beeches, and pines, offers an ideal playground for trail running. The salamander, an emblematic amphibian of these humid undergrowth, naturally gave its name to this event that celebrates running in the great outdoors.

Courses for all levels

The event offers distances adapted to all levels of practice, from beginners to experienced marathon runners:

  • 5 km: An introductory course ideal for beginners and families, entirely in the forest.
  • 10 km: A complete 10.5 km loop offering a first immersion into trail running on forest paths.
  • 21 km (half marathon): Two 10.5 km loops for intermediate runners, passing through the start village between the two laps.
  • 42 km (marathon): Four 10.5 km loops for experienced trail runners, with a cumulative elevation gain of 200 meters. Available solo, in a two-person relay (21 km each), or a four-person relay (10.5 km each).

A looped forest circuit

The originality of the Grand Trail des Salamandres lies in its looped circuit. Runners follow a 10.5 km course through the forest, repeating it one to four times depending on the chosen distance. This loop system allows spectators to see runners pass by multiple times from the start village, and for relay teams to easily hand over the baton. The course follows forest paths, dirt tracks, and undergrowth, offering a variety of terrains and landscapes throughout the race.

USP Running Trail: a passionate association

The event is organized by USP Running Trail, a sports association based in Le Poinçonnet, founded in 2003. This dynamic association brings together running and trail enthusiasts who train year-round on the forest trails. The organization of the Grand Trail des Salamandres mobilizes numerous volunteers who ensure course marking, aid stations, safety, and runner reception with professionalism and friendliness.

A friendly and sporting event

Beyond athletic performance, the Grand Trail des Salamandres aims to be a moment of sharing and conviviality. The start village, located in Le Poinçonnet, offers a catering area, entertainment, and a warm welcome for runners and their companions. The relay format allows teams of friends, colleagues, or families to participate together in the marathon, strengthening team spirit and good humor. Results and timing are managed by professionals, allowing each participant to measure their performance.
