Fencing demonstrations, 17th-century stalls, costumed parades, equestrian shows, baroque dances, and a theatrical night tour immerse visitors in the lavish atmosphere of the Grand Siècle court.
Grignan 1690 is a historical reenactment event that comes to life in the prestigious setting of the Château de Grignan, one of the largest Renaissance castles in southeastern France. For three days, the castle transforms into a true 17th-century court where the Count and Countess of Grignan welcome the famous Marquise de Sévigné with all the pomp due to her rank.
During the day, the castle comes alive with numerous activities that immerse visitors in the daily and festive life of the Grand Siècle. Fencing demonstrations showcase the art of sword fighting as it was practiced during the reign of Louis XIV. Recreated stalls faithfully reproduce the shops and artisan workshops of the 17th century, allowing visitors to discover the trades and know-how of the era.
Costumed parades traverse the castle courtyards and gardens, with participants wearing meticulously recreated period costumes. Equestrian shows feature riders in period attire, while workshops, games, and period dances invite visitors to actively participate in the festivities.
In the evening, the castle dons its finest attire for a theatrical night tour inspired by the grand festivities held by the Count and Countess of Grignan in the 17th century. Visitors wander through the illuminated and decorated halls of the castle, discovering theatrical scenes, baroque dances, choreographed fencing duels, and living tableaux that bring French art de vivre back to life under the reign of the Sun King.
Grignan 1690 is part of the long tradition of nocturnal festivities initiated in 1987 at the Château de Grignan. The event takes its name from the year 1690, a pivotal period during which Madame de Sévigné made her most famous stays with her daughter in Provence. In 2026, the event takes on a special significance as part of the Sévigné Year, celebrating the 400th anniversary of the Marquise's birth.
