Japanese Ways at the Ducal Palace of Nevers
The Hana Matsuri Festival, organized by the Tanabata Nevers Japon association, is a cultural event that immerses visitors in the fascinating world of Japan in the heart of the Ducal Palace of Nevers. Every spring, this festival offers workshops on ikebana, calligraphy, kintsugi, Japanese cuisine, and tea ceremony, as well as demonstrations of karate, shiatsu, and taiko. A bridge between France and Japan, between tradition and modernity, between contemplation and sensory experience.
The Hana Matsuri Festival — literally "flower festival" in Japanese — transforms the majestic Ducal Palace of Nevers into a true crossroads of the "Japanese Ways" every spring. Created by the association Tanabata Nevers Japon, this unique cultural event in Burgundy offers a complete immersion into Japanese arts, traditions, and lifestyle, building bridges between French and Japanese cultures.
The festival's program focuses on the practice and discovery of traditional Japanese arts. Visitors can learn ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement that elevates floral composition to a form of aesthetic meditation; kintsugi, the art of repairing broken ceramics with gold lacquer, a philosophy that turns scars into beauty; and calligraphy with a brush, a discipline that combines gesture, breath, and concentration.
Japanese cuisine workshops allow participants to learn how to prepare maki, gyoza, or wagashi (traditional sweets), while the tea ceremony (chanoyu) offers a moment of serenity and contemplation in the Zen tradition.
The festival's physical component features demonstrations of karate, shiatsu (Japanese therapeutic touch art), and taiko (Japanese drumming), whose powerful and captivating rhythms resonate under the arches of the Ducal Palace. These disciplines embody the spirit of rigor, respect, and harmony that characterizes Japanese culture.
The Ducal Palace of Nevers, the residence of the Dukes of Nevers from the 15th century and one of the finest examples of early Renaissance civil architecture in France, provides a prestigious and unique setting for the festival. The contrast between French medieval architecture and Japanese arts creates a magical and exotic atmosphere, inviting visitors on a unique sensory and spiritual journey.
The 2026 Hana Matsuri Festival will be held on April 11th and 12th at the Ducal Palace of Nevers, with a program of workshops and demonstrations centered around Japanese culture.
