International street arts festival in Metz
Hop Hop Hop is an international street arts festival created in 2010 in Metz by the company Deracinemoa. Free and open to all, it takes over the streets, squares, and parks of Metz and the Eurometropolis every summer with an eclectic and festive program mixing street theater, circus, concerts, fanfares, dance, and shows for young audiences. For about ten days around July 14th, over 200 artists from about forty French and international companies offer more than a hundred free performances, attracting over 45,000 spectators.
Created in 2010 by the company Deracinemoa, the Hop Hop Hop festival has become a national reference for street arts in just a few years. Every summer, around July 14th, it transforms Metz and the municipalities of the Eurometropolis into a vast open-air stage, featuring street theater, contemporary circus, concerts, strolling fanfares, dance, giant puppets, and shows for young audiences.
The philosophy of Hop Hop Hop is based on total accessibility. All shows and activities are free, allowing all audiences to participate in the celebration without financial barriers. This programming generosity is combined with a presence in public spaces: squares, streets, parks, and neighborhoods of Metz become ephemeral stages, fostering encounters and sharing between artists and spectators.
Each edition brings together about forty companies from France and abroad, representing over 200 artists. The program emphasizes diversity of forms: burlesque shows, acrobatic performances, physical theater, participatory installations, fanfare concerts, and pyrotechnic shows. Humor and conviviality are the common threads of this program designed to bring together all generations.
Since 2019, the festival has expanded its scope to include villages and municipalities within the Metz Eurometropolis. Since 2023, it has also traveled throughout the department, inviting associations and residents to participate and rediscover their living spaces through free and friendly performances. This territorial dimension strengthens social bonds and makes the festival a major player in performing arts in the Grand Est region.
Recognized as one of the leading national festivals for street arts, Hop Hop Hop plays a driving role in the cultural life of Metz and the Grand Est region. It contributes to the city's tourist appeal during the summer and provides a platform for emerging companies as well as established artists. The festival is supported by the City of Metz, the Eurometropolis, the Department of Moselle, and the Grand Est Region.
The festival's highlights include large fanfare parades through the streets of the city center, evening pyrotechnic shows, site-specific creations designed specifically for Metz's iconic locations, and participatory workshops that invite the public to become active participants in the celebration. Each edition concludes with a grand finale show gathering several thousand people.
