About Jazz Campus

Founded in 1977 by double bassist and composer Didier Levallet, Jazz Campus en Clunisois is one of the two or three oldest jazz festivals in France. Each summer, for a week in August, about fifteen concerts take place in the heritage sites of Cluny and the Clunisois — abbeys, Romanesque churches, vaulted cellars — while a jazz workshop brings together amateur and professional musicians for ensemble playing and improvisation.

Nearly half a century of jazz in the Clunisois region

It was in 1977 that double bassist and composer Didier Levallet, former director of the Orchestre National de Jazz, created the first jazz encounters and workshops in Lournand, between Cluny and Taizé, on the banks of the Grosne river. Modest but tenacious, the festival has grown to become Jazz Campus en Clunisois, one of the oldest jazz festivals in France, respected for its artistic standards and its spirit of sharing.

Concerts in the jewels of Romanesque heritage

Each year at the end of summer, about fifteen concerts are held in the exceptional heritage sites of Cluny and its region: the Farinier de l'Abbaye, the Romanesque churches of the Clunisois, vaulted cellars, and historic gardens. The remarkable acoustics of these ancient places offer a natural setting for the sounds of contemporary jazz and improvised music, creating a unique alchemy between heritage and living creation.

An exceptional workshop for passionate musicians

The uniqueness of Jazz Campus lies in the inseparable link between the festival and the workshop. Throughout the event, amateur and pre-professional musicians participate in ensemble playing, collective improvisation, and repertoire work sessions, guided by leading artists. In the evening, participants and the public come together for the concerts, in a spirit of transmission and conviviality that is the soul of the festival.

A festival rooted in its territory

Supported by an association and about thirty volunteers, Jazz Campus en Clunisois has, for nearly 50 years, prioritized the connection between the most current creation and amateur practices. The festival attracts internationally renowned artists — Henri Texier, Christophe Marguet, Jacky Terrasson — while remaining true to its original mission: to keep jazz alive in the beauty and serenity of the south of Burgundy.

Jazz Campus — edition 2026

49th edition of Jazz Campus en Clunisois, from August 15 to 22, 2026 in Cluny and the Clunisois region (Southern Burgundy). A week of jazz and improvised music concerts in the region's heritage sites, combined with a jazz workshop open to all levels. 2026 Headliners: Henri Texier « Blue Roots » Quintet, Christophe Marguet, Bruno Ducret 4tet « Invisibles ».

2026 Edition — 49th festival

The 49th edition of Jazz Campus en Clunisois takes place from August 15 to 22, 2026 in Cluny and the Clunisois region. Founded in 1977, the festival is one of the oldest jazz events in France and remains faithful to its dual vocation: transmission through workshops and sharing through concerts.

Around fifteen concerts take over the region's heritage sites — Église Saint-Marcel, Théâtre Les Arts, Écuries Saint-Hugues, Place de l'Abbaye — concluding with the Henri Texier « Blue Roots » Quintet on Saturday, August 22. In parallel, the jazz workshop offers music and singing workshops, a brass band workshop, and a young audience workshop, led by musicians from the French jazz scene.
