Historical reenactment of Gallo-Roman life in Saintes
The Journées Gallo-Romaines Ludi Romani invite the public on a journey through time in the ancient city of Médiolanum. For a weekend in May, the Saintes amphitheater comes alive with gladiator fights, historical demonstrations, and Roman banquets for an immersion into Gallo-Roman life.
Each year in May, the Journées Gallo-Romaines Ludi Romani bring Médiolanum, ancient Saintes, back to life. The public is invited to travel through the centuries to discover the Roman amphitheater as it was at its peak, with its gladiators, activities, and daily life.
On the program for this timeless weekend: gladiator fights, demonstrations with Alternative Animal and Roman chariots pulled by donkeys, reenactments of Gallo-Roman daily life. Visitors can attend collective Gallo-Roman banquets and eloquence performances in period costume.
The Gallo-Roman amphitheater of Saintes, one of the best-preserved in France, rediscovers its original purpose for the occasion. This listed monument, which could accommodate 15,000 spectators in antiquity, comes back to life for an exceptional weekend.
