Open-air multidisciplinary arts in the Villebourbon district
Every summer, the Villebourbon district of Montauban transforms into a vast open-air gallery during the L'Art aux Jardins festival. Painting, sculpture, street art, graffiti, circus, and dance take over the gardens and public spaces of this historic district along the Tarn for a day of free creation and sharing.
The L'Art aux Jardins festival was born from a simple yet strong desire: to bring contemporary art to where people live, in their gardens, their streets, their courtyards. Located in the historic district of Villebourbon, along the Tarn in Montauban, this multidisciplinary festival brings together local, regional, and national artists each year for a day of shared outdoor creation, completely free of charge.
The Villebourbon district, with its characteristic pink brick houses of Montauban architecture, its hanging gardens, and its narrow alleys, offers a naturally inspiring setting for artists. It is in this vibrant and popular environment that art is invited, without barriers or hierarchy, accessible to all eyes.
What sets L'Art aux Jardins apart from other summer art events is its commitment to multidisciplinarity. Far from being confined to a single form of expression, the festival embraces a deliberately broad artistic spectrum:
In 2025, the festival celebrated its 7th edition, confirming its place in Montauban's cultural calendar and its popular success. Each year, several hundred visitors explore the gardens of Villebourbon to discover works and attend performances, in a festive and relaxed atmosphere that is the pride of the district and its inhabitants.
Held on Sunday, June 8, 2025, this free event is open to all audiences, from families with children to contemporary art enthusiasts and curious passers-by. Free exploration between the different artistic spaces encourages unexpected encounters between visitors and artists, who remain accessible throughout the day to discuss their work.
One of the festival's major strengths is the direct involvement of Villebourbon residents. Some open their private gardens to host artworks or performances; others participate in the organization as volunteers. This community dimension gives L'Art aux Jardins a warmth and authenticity that large institutional events sometimes struggle to replicate.
The festival also supports emerging artists by offering them visibility and a stimulating creative context. For many local artists, participating in L'Art aux Jardins is a first major public exhibition experience, a valuable step in their professional journey.
The 8th edition of the L'Art aux Jardins festival is scheduled for early June 2026 in the Villebourbon district of Montauban. True to its multidisciplinary and free spirit, the festival will once again bring together visual artists, graffiti artists, circus performers, and dancers for a day of open-air creation for all in the gardens and public spaces of this historic district along the Tarn.
