La Retornada: Tence's Occitan Festival
Born in 2014 on the initiative of Occitan culture enthusiasts, La Retornada has become the essential meeting point for the North Occitan language and culture in Haute-Loire. The festival's name, meaning "the return" in Occitan, embodies the desire to revive and transmit the linguistic and cultural heritage of this northern Occitania region, straddling Auvergne, Limousin, and Ardèche.
A Festival Rooted in its Territory
The association La Retornada, created in November 2013 and based in Tence, carries this project with the conviction that Occitan culture has its rightful place in the contemporary world. Its missions go far beyond the festival: collection and enhancement of sound and photographic archives, publications, bi-monthly patois classes, introductory Occitan workshops for young people in local schools, and organization of immersion courses in Occitan language and culture in partnership with the Centre de Formation Professionnelle en Occitan (CFPO).
A Rich and Participatory Program
Each edition of the festival unfolds over an entire weekend, the second in July, with a diverse program:
- Concerts: Traditional Occitan music, folk, world music, featuring iconic groups like Castanha e Vin Novèl, La Talvera, Du Bartas, Garric, Lou Dalfin, and Mauresca Fracas Dub.
- Traditional Balls: Occitan balètis, Velay dances, traditional dances led by local musicians and singers.
- Workshops: Traditional dance, Occitan singing, theater in Occitan, language initiation for all ages.
- Conferences and Debates: Round tables on the future of the Occitan language and culture, meetings with authors and researchers.
- Live Performances: Theatrical performances in Occitan, readings, storytelling, humorous sketches by local and regional troupes.
- Producers' Market: Local artisans and producers showcasing regional specialties from Auvergne.
- Guided Tours in Patois: Discovery of local heritage commented in the Occitan language.
A Popular and Friendly Spirit
True to the Occitan spirit of sharing and conviviality, La Retornada operates on the principle of 'prix libre' (pay-what-you-want), making the festival accessible to everyone. Evenings are punctuated by rustic meals prepared by the association's volunteers and families involved in the Tence Calandreta (Occitan school) project. The festival mobilizes a team of passionate volunteers who bring this unique event in Haute-Loire to life.
A Place Steeped in History
The festival was long held at the Château du Mazel, a 13th-century residence perched at 900 meters altitude in a green setting, as well as at the La Lionchère site in Tence. These emblematic locations offer an exceptional setting to celebrate Occitan culture outdoors, in a spirit of popular celebration and intergenerational gathering.
