Saint Gens, patron saint of Monteux

Monteux's festive tradition is inseparable from its patron saint, Saint Gens (Geniès), a 12th-century Provençal hermit born in Monteux and venerated throughout the region. According to legend, Saint Gens caused springs to gush forth on the arid plateau of Monteux during a drought, making him the patron saint of plowmen and farmers. His sanctuary, nestled in the garrigue hills above Monteux, is the site of an annual pilgrimage that attracts thousands of faithful each spring.

The Saint-Gens festivities in spring and the summer festivals – including the Feu de Monteux – form the two pillars of the local festive calendar. The connection between the patron saint of plowmen and the fireworks tradition reflects Monteux's duality: an agricultural town rooted in Provençal tradition, open to modernity and spectacle.

The Porte du Ventoux as a backdrop
