The grand fireworks night of Monteux, an unmissable pyrotechnic event in Vaucluse
Every summer, Monteux lights up for its grand fireworks night, 'Le Feu de Monteux'. This town in the Porte du Ventoux is known throughout Provence for the quality and beauty of its pyrotechnic displays, a legacy of a local tradition dating back several generations. Thousands of spectators from Vaucluse and neighboring departments gather each year to experience this magical moment, followed by musical entertainment and popular festivities that make this night one of the most anticipated events of the Provençal summer.
In Vaucluse, the town of Monteux holds a special reputation: it is the town of fire. Nestled at the foot of Mont Ventoux, between the market garden plains of the Comtat and the first wooded slopes of the giant of Provence, this town of some 12,000 inhabitants has become over the decades one of the major pyrotechnic centers in Provence. Its Feu de Monteux is an unmissable summer event, drawing thousands of spectators from all over Vaucluse and neighboring departments each year.
Monteux's pyrotechnic reputation is partly explained by its industrial history. The town has long hosted companies working in chemistry and manufacturing, creating know-how and a culture of fire that has permeated the local identity. The tradition of the grand fireworks display has been built up gradually, with each edition seeking to surpass the previous one in splendor and technical skill.
The Feu de Monteux is not just a communal fireworks display: it is a true pyrotechnic show, scripted and accompanied by music, conceived as a work of art in itself. The volleys follow each other in rhythm with a carefully chosen soundtrack – film scores, international pop, original compositions – creating a visual and auditory harmony that transports the audience throughout the performance.
The pyrotechnic professionals who design the Feu de Monteux master all modern techniques: synchronized firing, cascade and fountain effects, rising jets, champagne finales... The firing site, chosen to offer maximum visibility from the areas set up for the public, allows the entire show to be enjoyed in the best conditions. The grand finale, always kept secret until the last moment, is the subject of all anticipation.
The Feu de Monteux is not just about the pyrotechnic display. The evening is preceded and followed by popular entertainment that makes this night a true village festival on the scale of a Provençal town. Refreshment stands, open-air restaurants, street food stalls, local specialty stands... the festivities are in full swing from sunset, in a joyful and family-friendly atmosphere.
Musical entertainment – DJs, local bands, ballroom orchestras – precedes and extends the show, for a night that stretches into the early hours of the morning for the most festive. Families with children mingle with couples and groups of friends, united by the same wonder at Monteux's illuminated sky.
A photo contest is now organized around the Feu de Monteux, inviting amateur and professional photographers to capture the most beautiful moments of the show. The results published after the event testify to the beauty of the shots and the passion that the Feu ignites in its spectators.
Monteux's festive tradition is inseparable from its patron saint, Saint Gens (Geniès), a 12th-century Provençal hermit born in Monteux and venerated throughout the region. According to legend, Saint Gens caused springs to gush forth on the arid plateau of Monteux during a drought, making him the patron saint of plowmen and farmers. His sanctuary, nestled in the garrigue hills above Monteux, is the site of an annual pilgrimage that attracts thousands of faithful each spring.
The Saint-Gens festivities in spring and the summer festivals – including the Feu de Monteux – form the two pillars of the local festive calendar. The connection between the patron saint of plowmen and the fireworks tradition reflects Monteux's duality: an agricultural town rooted in Provençal tradition, open to modernity and spectacle.
Monteux is officially classified as "Porte du Ventoux" (Gateway to Ventoux), a tourist area at the foot of the famous Mont Ventoux. This prime geographical location gives the Feu de Monteux an incomparable natural setting: in clear weather, the silhouette of the Ventoux stands out against the northern horizon, and the fireworks seem to erupt at the foot of the giant of Provence. Spectators located on the heights of Monteux or in the surrounding plain benefit from a clear 360-degree view that amplifies the visual impact of the pyrotechnic display.
Le Feu de Monteux returns in summer 2026 to once again illuminate the sky of the Porte du Ventoux. A grand scripted pyrotechnic show, musical entertainment, and popular festivities will once again bring together thousands of spectators for the most luminous night of the year in Monteux.
Le Feu de Monteux returns in the summer of 2026 for a new edition of the grand pyrotechnic night in the Vaucluse commune. As every year, thousands of spectators are expected to witness this scripted fireworks display that has earned Monteux its reputation throughout the region.
The evening will begin at 8 PM with popular festivities – refreshment stands, food, musical entertainment – before the much-anticipated moment: the pyrotechnic show at nightfall. Colorful jets, synchronized volleys set to music, and a triumphant grand finale will make this night a luminous interlude in the Provençal summer.
The "Feu de Monteux 2026" photo contest will once again invite photographers to capture the most beautiful images of the evening. The detailed date and program will be announced on the town hall website in spring 2026.
