Le Manchot Bulleur: Comics Celebration in Coutances

Since 2010, Le Manchot Bulleur has made Coutances an unmissable event for comic and children's literature enthusiasts in the Manche region. Supported by the association Les Chiens Rouges, founded in 1997 and specializing in artistic books, this friendly and free festival hosts around forty authors each June in the remarkable setting of the Saint-Nicolas church in Coutances.

A Festival Rooted in Local Heritage

The Saint-Nicolas church, with its majestic volumes and natural light, offers a unique setting for exhibitions of original artwork and signing stands. The choice of this heritage site gives the festival a singular atmosphere, where contemporary creation dialogues with medieval architecture. The festival has attracted renowned authors, notably the American artist Jim Woodring, who came specially from Seattle in 2012 to sign his series Franck.

A Rich and Free Program

The Manchot Bulleur program includes signing sessions with the attending authors, exhibitions of original works, educational exhibitions on comics and literature, debates and meetings, games, free introductory workshops on comics and drawing, as well as screenings. Each edition is organized around a theme: 'the book as an object / the travel journal' for the 2025 edition.

Evolution and Openness

In 2023, the festival broadened its scope by changing its name to simply 'Le Manchot', opening up more to children's and adult literature while keeping comics as its founding pillar. This evolution reflects the vitality of a festival that, despite modest means, continues to grow and build a loyal family and passionate audience.
