European Heritage Days in Saint-Lô

Every year in September, Saint-Lô actively participates in the European Heritage Days by offering a rich program of visits, activities, and discoveries. The prefecture of Manche, deeply marked by the bombings of June 1944 which destroyed over 95% of the city, offers a unique heritage of reconstruction, blending post-war architecture with preserved medieval remains.

Iconic sites to discover

The Heritage Days are an opportunity to visit sites usually closed to the public. The Saint-Lô Agglo building opens its doors for guided tours, offering an exceptional panoramic view of the city and the Vire valley from its 8th floor. Visitors can also participate in the "Survivor Agglo" activity, a fun trail through the agglomeration's facilities.

The water cycle and technical heritage

Saint-Lô Agglo also offers a discovery of the water cycle, presenting the water production facilities, the dam, and the distribution stations. This technical visit allows visitors to understand the functioning of the territory's essential infrastructure, an industrial and technical heritage rarely accessible to the general public.

A unique heritage of reconstruction

Saint-Lô is distinguished by its heritage of reconstruction, a testament to the rebirth of a city entirely destroyed. Notre-Dame church, whose facade bears the scars of the bombings, the miraculously preserved medieval ramparts, the post-war public buildings, and the stained-glass windows by Fernand Léger at the memorial hospital constitute a unique heritage ensemble in Normandy. The Heritage Days provide an informed perspective on this architecture that tells the city's eventful history.
