Festival of storytelling and spoken arts in Pougne-Hérisson
In the heart of the Gâtine deux-sévrienne, the tiny village of Pougne-Hérisson has proclaimed itself the "navel of the world", a mythical place from which all stories are said to have originated. It is in this improbable and enchanting setting that the Festival du Nombril du Monde has been celebrating storytelling and spoken arts since 1992, attracting thousands of visitors eager to be carried away by the magic of words.
Every two years, Le Nombril du Monde offers an artistic event of a unique kind. Storytellers, street artists, musicians, visual artists, poets, authors, and dreamers gather for several days of shows, performances, and fantasies centered around the spoken arts. The event transcends disciplinary boundaries to create an immersive experience where the real and the imaginary blend.
Inaugurated in 2004, the Garden of Stories is the jewel of Le Nombril du Monde. This unique garden-show in France invites visitors to wander through poetic and sound installations, works of art, story huts, and secret corners. Open from May to September, it employs six people and serves as a powerful tool for cultural and artistic mediation.
Le Nombril du Monde is intimately linked to the figure of the storyteller Yannick Jaulin, a local son, who helped make Pougne-Hérisson a major center for the art of narrative. His mischievous spirit and passion for storytelling permeate the DNA of the place and the festival, making each edition a joyful and offbeat celebration of living word.
The Nombril du Monde Festival 2026 — « La Fake au village » takes place from Thursday, August 13 to Saturday, August 15, 2026 in Pougne-Hérisson (Deux-Sèvres). This new edition of the biennial festival humorously and poetically explores the links between artistic lies, fiction, and fake news, through some forty performances of storytelling, street theater, music, poetry, and sound and plastic installations.
Every two years, the village of Pougne-Hérisson transforms into a grand laboratory of spoken arts. For 2026, the Nombril du Monde team has chosen the theme « La Fake au village », a common thread that humorously and poetically explores the grey areas between artistic fiction, pleasant lies, and fake news. For three days, from August 13 to 15, 2026, the gardens, paths, and hidden corners of the site will host some forty artistic proposals: storytelling performances, street theater, concerts, poetry, performed readings, workshops, and installations.
Among the announced events are « L'épopée taboue » by Louise Roux, « Dérive » by Compagnie Ocus, the Baptiste Pizon Quartet, concerts by Mémé les Watts and Oscar Fou, as well as a series of new formats around the theme: « Fake du jour », « Fake du soir », « Fake de la nuit », and the Grand Marché des Fake News. The festival also offers open stages, photo exhibitions, and a wandering Fake Choir Band on site, as well as a round table dedicated to media and artificial intelligence.
The Jardin des Histoires — a unique garden-show in France inaugurated in 2004 — remains the heart of the setup: poetic and sound installations, story cabins, and secret nooks serve as a natural backdrop for numerous proposals. The festival thus extends the whimsical identity of the place, in the tradition of the heritage of storyteller Yannick Jaulin, a local native.
The festival does not offer on-site camping: campsites, gîtes, and accommodations in the Gâtine poitevine and the Parthenay region are to be preferred, booking in advance given the attendance. Catering available on site during the three days.
