Festival of readings, encounters, and contemporary poetry on the Haut-Lignon plateau
Created in 1991 on the initiative of the Cheyne publishing house, founded by Jean-François Manier and Martine Mellinette, the Lectures sous l'Arbre festival is a unique literary and poetic event in France. Every year in August, for a week, about thirty authors are invited to the Vivarais-Lignon plateau, at an altitude of 1,000 meters, for a series of readings, encounters, literary walks, shows, film screenings, and writing workshops. Each year, the festival honors a foreign country, an artist, and a publisher, in a spirit of sharing and proximity between authors and the public. Now supported by the associations Typographie et Poésie and Calibert-en-Scène, the festival has been based in Mazet-Saint-Voy since 2025, around the Calibert hall. The program offers about sixty varied events, the majority of which are free, combining intimate readings, literary walks in nature, workshops (public reading, writing, translation, poetic improvisation), film screenings, live performances, and activities for young audiences. Shared meals with authors extend the experience in a friendly and warm atmosphere.
Since 1991, the Lectures sous l'Arbre festival has offered a unique space each summer for encounters between contemporary poetry, literature, and nature, at an altitude of 1,000 meters on the Vivarais-Lignon plateau in Haute-Loire. Born from the initiative of the Cheyne publishing house, founded in 1980 by Jean-François Manier and Martine Mellinette, this festival has established itself as a major literary event, far from the urban hustle and bustle, in an enchanting natural setting.
For over thirty years, Lectures sous l'Arbre has been intimately linked to Cheyne éditeur, a contemporary poetry publishing house located in Cheyne, in the commune of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon. Jean-François Manier built a unique project there: a festival where authors read their own texts, where encounters take place in the intimacy of a garden, a path, or a clearing, and where poetry rediscovers its oral and living dimension.
After the gradual withdrawal of Cheyne éditeur, the festival began a new chapter in 2025, now supported by the associations Typographie et Poésie and Calibert-en-Scène, under the direction of Dominique Rouchouze d'Araules.
Since the 34th edition in 2025, the festival has been held in Mazet-Saint-Voy, around the Calibert hall. This move marks a renewal while preserving the founding spirit: proximity to nature, intimacy of readings, and quality of exchanges between authors and the public. A shuttle service is provided from Le Chambon-sur-Lignon to facilitate access to the site.
Each edition offers about sixty events structured around several axes:
True to its spirit of openness, the festival offers more than half of its program for free. Encounters, some readings, and walks are paid at a modest price (around €6), while evening shows are offered at reduced rates. The festival remains a place for intergenerational sharing, where poetry is experienced daily in an exceptional natural setting.
The 35th edition of Lectures sous l'Arbre will take place from August 16 to 22, 2026, in Mazet-Saint-Voy. The festival continues its renewal on the Haut-Lignon plateau with a week of readings, literary walks, workshops, exhibitions, and shows centered around books and contemporary poetry.
