France's largest fireworks display at the foot of the ramparts of Carcassonne
The Embrasement de la Cité of Carcassonne is one of the most famous and spectacular fireworks displays in the world, fired every July 14th since 1898 from the ramparts of the medieval City. For over 25 minutes, the City literally ignites in colors — blue, white, yellow, green, red, and gold — before a grandiose finale of 1,200 impacts in 6 seconds over a 600-meter facade. The event attracts nearly 700,000 spectators from around the world each year.
The history of the Embrasement de la Cité dates back to August 14, 1898, when the City of Carcassonne organized grand festivities to welcome the "Cadets de Gascogne," a company bringing together the most eminent personalities in literature, arts, and politics. To conclude these celebrations, fireworks were launched from the ramparts, and the City was completely set ablaze, giving the impression of being nothing more than an immense block of incandescent stone. Fascinated by this spectacle, Achille Rouquet (1851-1928), founder of the Revue Méridionale, a painter, engraver, and Occitan poet, asked the mayor Jules Sauzède to reproduce this blaze every year using Bengal fires.
For over 125 years, the Embrasement de la Cité has taken place every July 14th starting at 10:30 PM. For over 25 minutes, the sky of Carcassonne lights up with sparkling blue, silver, yellow, green, and gold bursts. In the middle of the show, the walls and towers glow red amidst the smoke, and the City truly seems to ignite. The finale is a moment of absolute grace: 1,200 impacts in 6 seconds over a 600-meter facade, creating a wall of fire and light of striking intensity. This event is considered one of the most beautiful fireworks displays in France and attracts spectators from all over the world.
The Embrasement de la Cité brings together nearly 700,000 people each year to admire the show from the bridges, surrounding hills, the banks of the Aude, and all viewpoints offering a perspective on the medieval City. The national holiday on July 14th is the occasion for a full day of festivities in Carcassonne: concerts, street entertainment, popular dances, and, of course, the pyrotechnic climax of the evening. The best spots are taken early in the morning, and it is recommended to arrive in the early afternoon to fully enjoy the event.
Beyond the pyrotechnic spectacle, the Embrasement de la Cité has become a true intangible heritage of Carcassonne, a symbol of local pride, and an identity marker for the city. The image of the City in flames, between medieval ramparts and bursts of fire, has become one of the most iconic in Occitania and is a formidable vector for tourism promotion for the Aude department and the entire region.
The Embrasement de la Cité 2026 will take place on July 14th at 10:30 PM. This free pyrotechnic show, the most famous in France, will illuminate the ramparts of the medieval City for over 25 minutes in front of several hundred thousand spectators.
