The urban exhibition that transforms windows into works of art in the Lille metropolis
Les Fenêtres qui Parlent is a unique artistic and participatory event that unfolds every spring in over 20 neighborhoods of the Lille metropolis since 2001. For a month, artists from all disciplines take over more than 1,500 windows and balconies of private homes to transform them into exhibition spaces. This partnership between artists and citizens blurs the lines between private and public space, offering passers-by an open-air artistic journey. The event is coordinated by the Réso Asso Métro collective and involves about ten partner municipalities.
Les Fenêtres qui Parlent is an artistic and participatory event born in 2001 in the Lille metropolis. Every spring, for a month, artists from all disciplines take over the windows and balconies of willing residents to transform them into ephemeral exhibition spaces. This initiative, unique in France, blurs the boundaries between private and public space, between art and daily life.
Each edition sees over 1,500 windows metamorphose into works of art across more than 20 neighborhoods and about ten municipalities in the Lille metropolis. Artists work with residents to create installations that integrate with the architecture of the facades: paintings, sculptures, photographs, light installations, videos, textile creations, and sound works take over the windows for five weekends.
At the heart of the project is the partnership between artists and residents. Creators from various disciplines are put in touch with citizens who agree to lend their windows and balconies as artistic expression platforms. This encounter fosters exchanges between the population and artists, allowing residents to reclaim their street and their neighborhood.
Les Fenêtres qui Parlent transforms the streets of the metropolis into a vast open-air artistic trail. Passers-by discover the works as they wander, surprised by the artistic interventions that punctuate the facades. The event is entirely free and accessible to all, 24 hours a day.
The event is coordinated by the Réso Asso Métro collective, which brings together neighborhood cultural associations in the Lille metropolis. Each participating neighborhood has a referent association that organizes meetings between artists and residents, neighborhood openings, and associated activities.
The 25th edition of Les Fenêtres qui Parlent will take place from March 14 to April 12, 2026, in the Lille metropolis. For this anniversary edition, artists will take over more than 1,500 windows over 5 weekends in the participating neighborhoods.
Les Fenêtres qui Parlent celebrates its 25th edition from March 14 to April 12, 2026. For this anniversary, artists will take over more than 1,500 windows over 5 weekends, transforming the facades of the Lille metropolis into an open-air exhibition.
Les Fenêtres qui Parlent unfolds in over 20 neighborhoods of the Lille metropolis and partner municipalities. Maps of each neighborhood with window locations are available on the official website and distributed during neighborhood openings. The routes are designed to be walked in 30 to 60 minutes per neighborhood.
The windows are visible from the street, accessible on foot in each participating neighborhood. Use the Ilévia network (metro, tram, bus) to travel between neighborhoods. V'Lille stations are available for cycling between routes.
Completely free. The works are visible from the public space, 24/7, for the entire duration of the event (one month). Neighborhood openings and free guided tours are organized every weekend, allowing you to meet the participating artists and residents.
Each weekend, one or more neighborhoods organize their opening: a convivial moment to discover the works in the presence of artists and residents, sometimes with musical entertainment and light refreshments.
Residents wishing to lend their windows or balconies can contact their neighborhood cultural association via the official website. Registration generally takes place several months before the start of the event. Artists are then put in touch with residents to jointly create the work that will occupy the window.
Artists from all disciplines wishing to participate can apply via the official website or contact neighborhood associations directly. The project is open to professional and amateur artists.
