The Journées de l'Orgue: A Unique Event in the Heart of the Saint-Robert Abbey Church
Each year at the beginning of August, the Saint-Robert Abbey Church in La Chaise-Dieu resonates with the majestic sounds of its baroque organ for the Journées de l'Orgue. This intimate musical event, organized by the Marin Carouge association, pays homage to the exceptional organ heritage of the abbey and the organ builder who restored the instrument in 1727.
An Exceptional Historic Organ
The organ of the La Chaise-Dieu Abbey Church is a remarkable instrument whose 18th-century sound aesthetic allows for an authentic interpretation of baroque and classical repertoire. Restored several times, it underwent a complete overhaul of its wind system and mechanical adjustments in 2024, aimed at preserving its original harmonic character while ensuring its playability. This instrument is a living testament to the art of French organ building.
A Demanding Thematic Program
Each edition of the Journées de l'Orgue is structured around a carefully chosen musical theme, allowing for the exploration of the many facets of the organ repertoire. Three recitals are scheduled over three consecutive evenings, entrusted to renowned organists, holders of major positions or international concert artists. The programs highlight the works of major composers such as Bach, Couperin, Grigny, Buxtehude, and Clérambault, revealing the full sonic richness of the Casadéen instrument.
Residencies for Young Organists
In partnership with the organ classes of the Conservatoires nationaux supérieurs de musique et de danse de Paris et de Lyon, the Journées de l'Orgue annually hosts young organists in residence. These emerging artists perform preludes to the concerts and offer free recitals, contributing to the transmission and renewal of organ playing.
The Marin Carouge Association: Guardian of the Organ
Founded in 1995 on the occasion of the inauguration of the restored organ with the great organist Michel Chapuis, the Marin Carouge association is dedicated to promoting this exceptional instrument. Beyond the Journées de l'Orgue, it organizes instrument tours, thematic days, and publishes recordings (CDs, DVDs) as well as books dedicated to the abbey's organ. It also provides technical assistance when necessary for the maintenance and enhancement of the instrument.
A Grand Architectural Setting
The Saint-Robert Abbey Church, a masterpiece of 14th-century Auvergne Gothic art, offers an exceptional acoustic setting for organ recitals. Its imposing vaults and soaring nave enhance the instrument's sounds, creating an unforgettable musical and spiritual experience for listeners. La Chaise-Dieu, a village perched at over 1,000 meters altitude on the Livradois plateau, adds to the magic of the event with its peaceful atmosphere and thousand-year-old monastic heritage.
