About Les Poquelinades

Les Poquelinades is a friendly and warm amateur theatre festival, organized every spring at the Théâtre de Mayenne. Created in 2011, this annual event gives amateur troupes from all over France the opportunity to perform in a real Italian-style theatre. After a pre-selection by a secret jury from about fifteen applications, four companies are chosen for a weekend of performances, at the end of which the Audience Award and the "Coup de Cœur des Poquelinades" are presented.

Les Poquelinades: Amateur Theatre in the Spotlight in Mayenne

Since 2011, Les Poquelinades has offered an exceptional performance space for amateur theatre companies: the magnificent Théâtre de Mayenne, an Italian-style theatre on Place Juhel. The festival, whose name pays homage to Molière (Jean-Baptiste Poquelin), embodies the passion for amateur theatre and the belief that the stage of a real theatre should not be reserved for professionals alone.

A Rigorous and Benevolent Selection

Each year, about fifteen amateur troupes from all over France apply to participate in Les Poquelinades. A secret pre-selection jury examines the applications and selects four companies, ensuring the quality and diversity of the shows offered to the public. This rigorous selection gives the festival a national dimension recognized in the amateur theatre world.

A Weekend of Varied Performances

Over three days, the four selected troupes present their creations to the public of Mayenne. The program mixes genres and styles:

  • Comedies: from boulevard to vaudeville, including contemporary comedy
  • Tales and Stories: stage adaptations of classic or original texts
  • Engaged Theatre: plays addressing social or philosophical themes
  • Original Creations: texts written by the companies themselves

Awards Presented by the Audience and a Jury

At the end of the weekend, three awards are presented:

  • The Audience Award: presented by the spectators to their favorite show
  • The Jury Award: awarded by a jury of professionals and informed amateurs
  • The "Coup de Cœur des Poquelinades": a special distinction from the organization

A Friendly and Accessible Festival

Les Poquelinades cultivate a spirit of friendliness and sharing. Prices are deliberately modest to allow as many people as possible to access performing arts. The warm atmosphere of the festival encourages exchanges between troupes and the public, making each edition a moment of meeting and discovery.

The Théâtre de Mayenne: A Jewel Box for Dramatic Art

The Théâtre de Mayenne, located on Place Juhel in the heart of the city, offers an intimate and prestigious setting for Les Poquelinades. This Italian-style theatre, with its classical architecture and remarkable acoustics, transforms each performance into an exceptional moment for amateur actors who rarely have the opportunity to perform in such conditions.
