The rock and metal festival in the heart of the Vosges fir trees
Born in 2014 from the desire of a group of passionate friends, the Les Sapins Barbus festival shook the Bruche grounds in Dommartin-lès-Remiremont for seven editions. Half rock, half Vosges, this unique event combined electrifying concerts, local produce, and a do-it-yourself spirit in a fir tree setting. From punk to metal, including garage rock, the festival hosted international headliners like Alestorm, Nashville Pussy, and No One Is Innocent, attracting up to 2,500 festival-goers under its iconic eight-meter giant fir tree.
At the end of 2013, a handful of Vosges friends shared a bitter observation: there was no accessible and friendly rock festival in the Vosges. From this frustration, the Saltimbanque association was born, and with it, the Sapins Barbus project. The name alone summarizes the festival's identity: sapin (fir tree) for the Vosges territory, barbu (bearded) for the rock spirit. In August 2014, the first edition took over the place de l'église in Dommartin-lès-Remiremont with five bands and 450 enthusiastic spectators. The adventure had begun.
Edition after edition, Les Sapins Barbus grew in scale while retaining its artisanal DNA. In 2015, the audience doubled to reach 900 people. In 2016, the 1,200 festival-goer mark was surpassed. The festival then moved to the intercommunal terrain de la Bruche, route de Xonvillers, a larger space allowing for free camping and multiple stages. The 2017 edition brought together over 2,400 festival-goers, confirming the festival's place in the Lorraine cultural landscape. In 2018, for its fifth edition, Les Sapins Barbus expanded to two days, three stages, and twelve bands, featuring a monumental eighteen-meter-long log stage entirely built by volunteers.
The programming of Les Sapins Barbus has always cultivated eclecticism in amplified music: alternative rock, punk-rock, metal, blues rock, garage, and even pirate metal with Alestorm. The festival hosted renowned artists such as Nashville Pussy, No One Is Innocent, Tagada Jones, AqME, The Rumjacks, Sticky Boys, and Opium du Peuple, alongside regional bands like Bottomz Up, Stone Deaf, and Les Bredelers. But Les Sapins Barbus was also a gastronomic experience: homemade tofailles (the traditional Vosges dish), blueberry tarts, local cheeses, and the famous artisanal beer « Sapin Barbue » brewed especially by the Marie-Thérèse brewery in Remiremont. Entry to the site was through an eight-meter giant fir tree, the true totem of the festival.
The seventh and final edition took place on August 21, 2021, with five bands — No One Is Innocent, Opium du Peuple, Bottomz Up, Les Bredelers, and Black River Sons — and nearly 80 volunteers mobilized. President Jérôme Millotte explained at the time that the team "felt they had given all they had to give." This final evening also paid tribute to Nicolas, a founding member and technical manager who passed away in January 2021. Although the Les Sapins Barbus adventure has ended, its legacy endures: that of a citizen-friendly, accessible festival deeply rooted in its territory, which proved that rock could resonate amidst the Vosges fir trees.
The 9th edition of Les Sapins Barbus returns to Dommartin-lès-Remiremont for another weekend of rock, punk, and metal in the heart of the Vosges. The Bruche grounds will once again host festival-goers and volunteers for electrifying concerts, Vosges gastronomy, and a unique atmosphere among fir trees and guitars.
