Annual medieval festival in the first Cistercian abbey of Normandy in Lisors
For over twenty-five years, Notre-Dame de Mortemer Abbey in Lisors has hosted its Medieval Festival on the weekend of August 15th. Founded in 1134 by King Henry I Beauclerc, son of William the Conqueror, this abbey was the first Cistercian foundation in Normandy. Nestled in the heart of the Lyons state forest, between Lyons-la-Forêt and Lisors, it provides an exceptional natural and historical setting for this grand medieval festival, which has become one of the major heritage events in the Eure department.
The highlight of the Mortemer Medieval Festival is the equestrian tournament held in the vast meadow adjacent to the abbey ruins. Knights in armor compete in jousts and displays of horsemanship, to the cheers of the crowd. Ground combat complements the spectacle with reenactments of medieval battles, sword duels, and demonstrations of historical combat techniques. These performances are delivered by renowned historical reenactment groups who showcase their prowess and authenticity.
Several medieval music groups entertain throughout the two days with their period instruments—vielles, bagpipes, tambourines, flutes, and percussion. Medieval dances are a special feature of the event: the public is invited to join in and learn the steps of these ancient dances in a joyful and friendly atmosphere. A costume rental service for children and adults allows everyone to step into the shoes of a knight, a lady, or a medieval peasant.
The grand craft market brings together dozens of exhibitors offering medieval-inspired creations: jewelry, pottery, leather goods, decorative weapons, clothing, illuminations, and gastronomic specialties. Visitors can discover the ancestral skills of the artisans and acquire unique pieces. For dining, stalls offer medieval-inspired dishes and Norman specialties to enjoy between shows.
Mortemer Abbey is renowned not only for its Cistercian architectural heritage—remains of the abbatial church, 18th-century monastic buildings, dovecote—but also for its legends and mysteries. Tales of the White Lady, ghost monks, and unexplained phenomena lend the place a unique atmosphere that enhances the medieval experience. The abbey museum retraces the site's history and presents the legends surrounding it, adding a cultural dimension to the visit.
The 28th Medieval Festival of Mortemer Abbey will take place on Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, 2026, in Lisors, in the park of the Cistercian abbey in the heart of the Lyons forest. Equestrian tournaments, knight fights, Viking reenactments, a medieval market, artisanal food, and a grand Saturday night show punctuate this unmissable event of the Eure heritage.
