Medieval animations at the foot of the Château de Baugé
Baugé-en-Anjou boasts exceptional medieval heritage. The Château de Baugé, a hunting lodge of King René of Anjou in the 15th century, and the Battle of Vieil-Baugé in 1421, a major Franco-Scottish victory in the Hundred Years' War, have inscribed this Anjou town in France's medieval history. It is in this historical setting that medieval animation days take place each summer, transforming the castle and its gardens into a true medieval village.
The medieval days of Baugé offer a rich and varied program of animations that transport visitors to the time of knights and troubadours:
The animations are provided by renowned historical reenactment companies, including the Alliance des Lions d'Anjou, the Compagnie Plantagenêt, and the Compagnie des Archers Ligériens. These troupes, passionate about living history, offer rigorous and educational reenactments, allowing visitors to touch, handle, and experience medieval daily life.
On March 22, 1421, Franco-Scottish troops commanded by the Constable of Buchan won a decisive victory against the English led by the Duke of Clarence on the banks of the Couasnon, at Vieil-Baugé. This battle, a true revenge for the defeat at Agincourt in 1415, is periodically celebrated with grand medieval festivals, such as the one organized in 2022 for its 600th anniversary. The regular summer animations at the castle perpetuate the memory of this exceptional historical heritage.
Throughout summer 2026, the Château de Baugé (King René's castle) hosts medieval animation days. From July 11th to August 17th, re-enactment companies, artisans, storytellers, and demonstrators bring the Middle Ages back to life in the gardens and palace: calligraphy, leatherwork, ancient board games, tastings of old-time beverages, weapon demonstrations, and combat techniques. The animations are included in the castle entrance ticket.
From July 11th to August 17th, 2026, the Château de Baugé offers a season of medieval animations in the heart of King René's palace. Several companies take turns throughout the summer to revive the gestures and know-how of the Middle Ages.
La Compagnie Plantagenêt kicks off the festivities: artisans and enthusiasts present medieval daily life through demonstrations of calligraphy, leatherwork, board games, and tastings of old-time beverages.
L'Alliance des Lions d'Anjou recreates a medieval tournament atmosphere: culinary traditions, weapon demonstrations, combat techniques, and presentation of defensive equipment.
Animations generally take place from 10 AM to 12:30 PM and from 2 PM to 6 PM (storytelling at 3 PM), and are included in the castle entrance ticket. For additional dates and companies of the season, consult the official castle agenda.
