A fair rooted in the history of Trièves
The origins of the Mens May 1st Fair date back to the Middle Ages, a time when seasonal fairs were already held in this mountain village on May 1st and October 4th. Mens, the historic capital of Trièves, has always been a center for trade and commerce at the crossroads of the Alpine valleys in southern Isère. Over the centuries, the May 1st fair has become a must-attend event, retaining its rural and popular character while adapting to the region's changes.
250 exhibitors in the village streets
Each year, the fair takes over the entire center of Mens with around 250 exhibitors spread throughout the village streets and squares. The offerings are diverse and reflect the region's diversity: local and organic producers offering cheeses, honey, jams, and mountain cured meats, nurserymen with plants, flowers, and fruit trees, artisans showcasing their creations, clothing merchants, tools, and decorations, as well as stands for agricultural equipment.
Farm animals and rural traditions
True to its vocation as a mountain agricultural fair, the event traditionally features farm animals: poultry, rabbits, goats, and sheep are presented by local breeders. This agricultural dimension highlights the importance of livestock farming and agriculture in the economy of Trièves, a mid-mountain region located between Vercors and Dévoluy.
Food, rides, and conviviality
The fair is also a moment of conviviality with numerous food stalls offering local specialties: ravioles, grilled meats, crepes, and other delicacies. A funfair with rides and attractions accompanies the day, much to the delight of families. Musical entertainment and street performances also punctuate the festivities, creating a festive atmosphere in the village alleys.
The second largest fair in Isère
Considered the second largest fair in Isère after Beaucroissant, the Mens May 1st Fair attracts several thousand visitors from across the region each year. Whether it rains, blows, or snows, the event takes place, true to the resilient spirit of the people of Trièves. The event is organized by the commune of Mens with the support of local associations and village merchants.
