Christmas chalets at the gates of Switzerland
Every year in December, the town of Delle, at the gates of Switzerland and the Alsatian Sundgau, adorns its streets with fairy lights and opens its traditional Christmas market. Wooden chalets from local artisans, seasonal specialties, children's entertainment, and a warm atmosphere make this winter event a convivial moment appreciated by families in the south of the Territoire de Belfort.
Nestled at the southern tip of the Territoire de Belfort, just a few kilometers from the Swiss border and the Alsatian Sundgau, the town of Delle celebrates the magic of Christmas every December with its traditional market. The municipality, crossed by the river Allaine and rich in remarkable architectural heritage, offers an authentic and warm setting for this annual winter event that brings together residents and visitors from surrounding towns.
The Delle Christmas market focuses on authenticity and conviviality. The wooden chalets set up in the town center bring together local artisans, creators, and producers from the Territoire de Belfort who offer their creations and seasonal specialties. Handmade jewelry, decorative items, ceramics, natural soaps, and textiles are displayed alongside gourmet stalls offering gingerbread, artisanal jams, fine chocolates, mulled wine, and pretzels. The family-friendly and authentic atmosphere of this human-sized market makes it one of the appreciated events in the south of the department.
The Delle Christmas market offers a program of entertainment designed for families every year. Children are particularly spoiled with craft workshops, puppet shows, and the unmissable visit of Santa Claus, who distributes treats and gifts. Musical entertainment—choirs, traditional singing groups, brass bands—enlivens the evenings and creates a festive and warm atmosphere in the illuminated streets. Local associations in Delle actively participate in the organization and offer additional entertainment throughout the weekend.
Delle's privileged geographical location, a crossroads between Franche-Comté, Alsace, and Switzerland, gives it particular appeal during the holiday season. Visitors from the Swiss Bernese Jura, the Alsatian Sundgau, and neighboring towns in the Haut-Rhin increase the market's attendance and demonstrate the cross-border reach of this event. The town of Delle, now connected to the cross-border rail network by the Franco-Swiss RER, is accessible from Basel and Mulhouse, which enhances its tourist appeal during the end-of-year holidays. The Delle market thus constitutes a charming and authentic link in the rich offering of Christmas markets in the greater northeastern region of France.
Continuing the tradition of the Mois Givré, which enlivens the prefecture of Belfort every December, the towns of the Territoire de Belfort perpetuate their own end-of-year holiday traditions. Delle, a town of some 6,000 inhabitants, exemplifies this associative and municipal vitality that keeps festive traditions alive in medium-sized French towns. The Christmas market is organized with the support of the municipality and local associations, in a spirit of sharing and conviviality characteristic of the Territoire de Belfort.
The Delle Christmas Market 2026 will return to illuminate the town center for a new festive Advent weekend, with artisan chalets, children's entertainment, and a Christmas atmosphere at the gates of Switzerland.
