Historical and religious performance at the Théâtre des Roches of Alise-Sainte-Reine
The Mystery of Sainte-Reine is a centuries-old theatrical performance held annually in late August at the Théâtre des Roches in Alise-Sainte-Reine, Côte-d'Or. Performed entirely by the local inhabitants, this mystery recounts the martyrdom of Saint Reine, a young Gallo-Roman shepherdess put to death in 253 for refusing to renounce her Christian faith before the Roman governor Olibrius. Preceded by a torchlight procession on Saturday evening and a historical parade on Sunday, the performance perpetuates a tradition documented since 866.
For over a thousand years, the inhabitants of Alise-Sainte-Reine have perpetuated the memory of the martyrdom of Saint Reine, a young Gallic noblewoman converted to Christianity, put to death in 253 by order of the Roman governor Olibrius. The current text, written in 1877, is part of a long tradition of theatrical performances dating back to the 17th century. The Mystery of Sainte-Reine is entirely created and performed by volunteers from the commune and its surroundings, all passionate amateurs.
Since 2009, the Mystery has been performed twice annually on the last weekend of August. On Saturday evening at 9 PM, the performance is preceded by a prayer at the Sainte-Reine chapel, followed by an impressive torchlight procession through the village streets to the Théâtre des Roches. On Sunday at 3 PM, a costumed historical parade retracing the life and martyrdom of the young shepherdess opens the festivities, followed by an open-air mass at the theater before the performance.
Built in 1946 on the hillside, the Théâtre des Roches offers an exceptional natural setting for this open-air performance. Nestled on the slopes of Mont Auxois, the site of the famous Battle of Alesia, this natural amphitheater hosts several hundred spectators in an atmosphere of reverence and emotion. The natural decor of rocks and vegetation enhances the dramatic power of this ancient tragedy.
The 2026 edition of the Mystery of Sainte-Reine is scheduled for August 29th and 30th at the Théâtre des Roches in Alise-Sainte-Reine. Two performances are planned: Saturday evening at 9 PM with a torchlight procession, and Sunday at 3 PM with a historical parade and open-air mass.
The 2026 Mystery of Sainte-Reine will be held on August 29th and 30th at the Théâtre des Roches in Alise-Sainte-Reine. As every year, the Saturday evening torchlight procession and the Sunday historical parade will accompany the two performances of this millennial tragedy.
