The indie festival that unearths talent from Mains d'Œuvres in Saint-Ouen
MOFO is the independent music festival of Mains d'Œuvres in Saint-Ouen, founded in 2001 on the initiative of the band Herman Düne. Nicknamed 'the smallest of the big festivals', it brings together about twenty artists from the pop, rock, electro, experimental, and punk scenes over three evenings each winter on two stages, with an infallible knack for spotting future talents before anyone else.
Since 2001, the MOFO festival has been a must-attend event for all lovers of alternative and independent music in Seine-Saint-Denis. Founded at Mains d'Œuvres, the artistic creation and performance venue in Saint-Ouen, MOFO has built an international reputation for excellence and unparalleled musical curation over more than twenty years.
It all began in 2001 when programmer Benoît Rousseau and the folk band Herman Düne, in residence at Mains d'Œuvres, decided to create a festival to promote independent folk aesthetics. From this spontaneous project, MO'FO was born – an ambiguous acronym that could mean 'Mother Folk', 'Mains d'Œuvres Folk', or something more irreverent depending on the mood. The festival quickly opened up to other styles and other programmers, including Nicolas Cuinier (future director of Petit Bain) and Jiess Nicolet (future director of My Favorite).
MOFO proudly claims its title as 'the smallest of the big festivals'. No huge stages, no outdoor festival, no camping: the festival takes place every winter in the intimate venues of Mains d'Œuvres (1 rue Charles Garnier, 93400 Saint-Ouen) over three evenings, with about twenty invited artists. This intimate and demanding format allows for a connection with the audience and artists that larger festivals cannot offer, with performances that approach perfection in impeccable sound and visual conditions.
MOFO's strength lies in its eclectic programming and its flair for emerging talent. Pop, rock, electro, experimental, ambient, punk, techno: all aesthetics of independent music find their place here, without hierarchy or prejudice. The festival has thus revealed artists who have become references in the global independent music scene well before their time, confirming its reputation as a trendsetting festival and a beacon for alternative scenes.
Each edition of MOFO features a new animal mascot that becomes the festival's visual identity for that year: gorillas, pandas, ostriches, polar bears, dinosaurs, and penguins have followed one another over the years, contributing to the playful and offbeat visual identity of a festival that never takes itself too seriously while maintaining absolute artistic rigor. The 20th edition, celebrated in March 2026, brought together all the mascots for a grand anniversary.
Mains d'Œuvres is much more than a concert venue: it's a living and creative space that houses artist studios, rehearsals, residencies, and events throughout the year. By anchoring MOFO there, the festival benefits from a community of artists and music lovers who share the same values of independence, curiosity, and high standards. La Station – Gare des Mines, a regular partner of the festival for its after-parties, complements this setup by extending the celebration until the early morning.
The 20th edition of MOFO, 'grand anniversary of the animofos', took place from March 12 to 14, 2026, at Mains d'Œuvres in Saint-Ouen to celebrate the festival's 20th anniversary with a 100% live edition featuring all the mascots.
The MOFO festival celebrated its 20th anniversary from March 12 to 14, 2026, at Mains d'Œuvres, for a memorable edition titled 'grand anniversary of the animofos'. All the mascots that have graced the festival's twenty years were brought together for this 100% live edition that left a lasting impression on the entire MOFO community.
